I have an old 60's 12 string which I got for free to use as a project to practice doing neck resets, I was just wondering if there is anyone local to me who may be able to help me through it? or maybes anyone on here who can give me some tips, my main problem is that I don't have all the necessary tools because I do have quite a good idea what I have to do.

Hi Alex, and sorry but I can't help you out with any local (or useful!) assistance personally. Your idea about soliciting tips from luthiers on here might be your best bet, though. You could PM them directly or just see if they contact you on this thread. Off the top of my head we have davewhite, taranguitars, ajlucas, chrisperkins, colins, donalmcgreevy, garynava, keithambridge, multistringsteve, ntredwell, and richm. Sincere apologies to any I may have overlooked

Perhaps he's gotten so good now, he's transcended the normal method of building guitars using the simple, honest tradition of nailing bits of plywood onto some 2x4, and now he's probably using some sort of cheese to create his unearthly instruments rodders, please come back and tell us how it should be done!

I think I'll see how Quickly I can destroy well I can repair this guitar on my own... Although I have a steamer, I do not have a needle or hose to go down through the hole into the join to steam the neck off so I tried the method of removing the fretboard tongue at the 14th fret to reveal the dovetail join. another problem that has revealed itself is that part of the top and possibly a bit of the neck block have come a bit loose, once the neck is off I should be able to re glue those. If I mess up then there will be little lost, it was found in a skip after all...

Ah, judging by the label it's an Eros. I can't help you personally - what I know about lutherie could be written on the back of an ant with room to spare - but if it's any help they're Eko Ranger clones, so you may find some info on working on them round the web.

Yes it is an eros I have just successfully steamed the neck off!!, however, with steaming every other panel of the guitar decided to come off with it so the sides, back and top are no longer attached to the neck block, the back and sides also delaminated, hopefully it can be glued together :/ Luthiers, any way out of this one?

Unfortunately I'm a fair distance from Whitley Bay (although I did use to live down the road in Cullercoates), otherwise me and my trusty hammer would have that sorted in no time at all. Having recently been told I'm being made redundant it could be the opportunity I need to take my guitar making skills full time!! Good luck with the repair!

Having recently been told I'm being made redundant... Bugger. Sorry to hear that, Rodders. I wish you well in moving on to something better.

Alex, Not good news when laminated pieced delaminate but you should be able to glue and clamp it all back together with suitable clamps and cauls - if it doesn't work then the guitar cost you nothing. I'd start with the back, then the sides and then the top - get some Titebond original glue. Try dry runs clamping up first before you glue and clamp for real to check that it all goes back together as it came apart - particularly where the bindings left on the sides will meet the back and top. Welcome to the fun world of luthiery Rodders - Bummer indeed. I hope that something new and more fulfilling comes along for you soon.

I have decided to write the guitar off (for an all laminate guitar, it probably isn't worth the time/effort and money spent on tools) but salvage parts including the entire neck and neck block because I was actually starting to make a guitar replicating an old stella, I already have the oak back and sides roughly cut and I had carved a solid oak neck although I could use the one from this guitar, I could either use parts from this to create the stella-ish guitar or I could make a copy of this guitar (same shape/look) but with solid oak back and sides, I need to get a bending iron though (any chance of finding one of those used do you think?)

Although it is a shame the guitar could't be saved, I did manage to save quite a few items from it which will be used in future projects. I also found why the guitar simply fell apart when the neck was removed, there was virtually nothing holding it together, the glue used for everything except the neck join (which was hide glue) had no strength at all, it was all just crumbling, it was very similar to wall filler so it let go with the steam and pressure of removing the neck. I do hope to once more attempt a reset on a old solid wood guitar which will hopefully be a bit better than this one was and I would quite like to get a vintage EKO ranger 12 string which is in good condition one day because what I was able to play on this 12 string sounded alright before it fell apart I also liked the 16 3/4" body, although the EKO ones are probably better than the EROS 12ers At least I now know that I can remove a guitar neck (and possibly reset it if the guitar doesn't self destruct).
