(And I don't mean when you have to back off from having yet another guitar in the house!)
12 months ago, and before I was on this forum and learned about HF5, I booked a treat for myself; a weekend guitar retreat. Quite pricey for what it is but if you're not having big hols, why not! Then a couple of cardiac arrests got in the way and I had to postpone, but I've now rebooked and go in 10 days time from Friday to Sunday on a 'retreat' in the Cotswolds called 'Intermediate Acoustic - Beyond the third fret' (or what I call 'the dusty end'). Don't really know what to expect except sore fingers after long sessions Friday evening to Sunday lunch. About 12 people attending and a pro instructor. Hoping that I'm not the dunce! Or that I come back Buddhist!
Has anyone been to any of these sort of things? If so what should I expect.

I have never been but should be very interested in your experiences. A review would be great.

I've kind of been on one of these.
It was apart of Music thing across all Schools in my region. Where you go away for 4 days to the beautiful place called St Andrews. lock you in a room with fellow guitarists to learn a range of songs and have great jam sessions. Then on the 5th day you play a concert.
Was great because it was split into 3 sections Brass/Percussion, Strings and GUITARS. Just doing covers of big hits. Was a blast.

A guitar playing friend of mine has been on a few of these guitar weekend retreat things. Very enthusiastic about them and about the benefits they bring - plus he finds them fun. But I suspect from what he has said that sore fingers must be a fair possibility! Hope you have fun, and it would be good to hear how you get on. I've not decided whether one of these retreats would be for me or not - though arthritic fingers and intensive long playing sessions are not happy bedfellows. Mark

Well with my limited guitar skills - who knows if I'll learn anything, but I'm definitely going with the intention of having a good time! Had a blast at this weekend camp folkcollege.com for folk instruments a couple of months ago (lots of fiddles, some bazookas, a dobro, hammer dulcimers, harmonicas, penny whistles ---- and more than a few guitars... fascinating) and decided I wanted more!!! (ended up with groups of us ON STAGE playing and singing harmony... yikes! (harmony sounded pretty good if I say so myself, but the playing, not so sure!!!). At these camps you get the option of staying college dorms, but if you've seen US college dorm rooms (or experienced the beds) you may choose to stay at somewhere less designed to cause permanent back damage and get some sleep !!!

Sounds great, although the dorm thing sounds more suited to, well, students.
Can't fail to learn stuff hanging around and playing with other musicians. There's a weekend planned for forum members over here (there's a thread somewhere) and I'm really looking forward to it. I haven't met any of the folk on the Forum - or their guitars. Gonna be great!
Enjoy yours.
Alasdair.
