Being as I've got another year older today and I noticed from the website Guitar Village had a very nice looking e.g. of a Gibson J15 in I thought I'd go and investigate.
not only was the J 15 nothing to write home about, I don't think I've ever been in a less comfortable environment to try guitars since I was last in Guitar Village with Robbie about a year a go.
I got about 3 yards inside the front door before I was pounced on by a salesman asking what I was looking for, I replied politely I'd come to look at some acoustics in the hope he would realise as I was well beyond the teenage delinquent years and looking at acoustics he'd leave me alone. No, he followed me a pace behind all the way thro the shop to the acoustics rooms asking if there was anything in particular I wanted to look at. I mentioned I was interested in the J15, he wandered straight past the room containing Gibson acoustics into the Gibson room full of les Paul's before eventually finding J15 and getting it down for me. If you want to try anything you must ask so he can get it off the stand for you.
i was offered a tuner to get it into proper tune but then immediately that got taken away again as they were tuning all the Gibsons they'd moved ahead of a Gibson Custom open day tomorrow. After 5 mins I decided J15 wasn't for me but would, like to compare it to J45. He got the J 45 down for me looking rather put out that I was interrupting his prep for tomorrow's great day, despite the fact I appeared to be the only person in the shop and then he went back to the next room to tune Les Paul's. I walked thro 30 seconds later to ask if I could borrow the tuner again, was told to not walk around the shop with guitars I should shout his name so he could come and service me as theyd had too many accidents with people walking round with guitars. Obviously even more put out I was taking up his valuable time he asked if I was going to buy today (The same question Robbie got asked after a few minutes of playing one guitar on our last visit) I replied if I played something that blew me away then I probably would. Well your looking at the wrong thing then, you need to try a £2500 custom model he said in a why are wasting your time on this cheap tattle sort of manner!
I had a brief look round the other acoustic rooms to see that even the bottom end Taylor's were locked in the stands in the manner that the £2000+ guitars used to be.
I appreciate they were prepping for an open day tomorrow but they have lots of staff there and I was almost the only customer in the whole shop, I also appreciate they must have had one or two incidents with stock getting dinged, but hey it's quiet as anything and I like to think it's fairly obvious I'm of an age and disposition I can be trusted not to swing it round my head as I walk thro the shop or that I was not wearing a huge zipped jacket or massive belt buckle etc.
needless to say I didnt buy anything, not even some lemon oil I was going to get to use next time I restring my Atkin. After the last two experiences of this shop I can't imagine I'll be bothering with any further visits. I'll get some lemon oil next time I in one of my more local shops who know how to,treat customers.
