Gutted. Whilst playing my new Faith knocked it against a chest of drawers and marked the top. Half inch scratch which gone through the lacquer. Not sure whether to get it repaired or leave it. Anyone done something similar and got it repaired and what did it look like after?

I know this is kind of counter-intuitive, thejamsinger, but you'll probably enjoy playing the guitar more now. There's an inherent desire (in me, at least) to keep instruments looking pristine when I get them and this seems to stop me playing them as much as I want to - until they get their first 'lovebite' from knocking it against something and then I remember that it's a guitar for making music not an ornament to be looked at. Yes, it's always a disappointing shock when you do it - and, by all means get it seamlessly repaired by someone who knows what they're doing if you can't stand the sight of the ding, but it's done now so play on, sir, play on!

Maybe it's a blessing...
It was gonna happen sooner or later - perhaps better to get that 'first ding' out of the way.
I got my first quality guitar in 1980;, a Fylde Orsino. I took it home to show my mother and as we both gazed at the pristine beauty of this guitar the lid closed on it and put two dents in the afore-mentioned pristine cedar top. One of the longest silences of my life followed.
I took delivery of two Tarans in March of this year and they're both still pristine... (not quite s******g bricks yet, but...)
Like I said, it's gonna happen sooner or later...
Maybe I envy you in a strange way...
Think of it as personality - it's really your guitar now.
All the best,
Alasdair.

My beautiful blue tanglewood. Not long after I'd got it it got banged, put a dent in the headstock. I was like for a while. My precious!

I know this pain. About a month after getting my Larrivee D03 (some nine years ago now) I accidentally dropped it into a door frame. Put a 12 inch split down the side along the waist and round the lower bout. Fortunately on the bass side so not load-bearing. Got it repaired so it's structurally fine but the split itself is still visible. It's just part of the story now. No bother.

thejamsinger - Sorry to hear your news, but the first ding is always the worst - after that things don't seem as bad somehow. Wear it with pride. I had longed for many years to own a Lowden - finally got one in 1997. 10 weeks after buying it, when taking a break during a gig, I knocked it off its stand, face forwards onto a box of hand percussion instruments. Result was a sort of triple ding that had me moping for weeks. It mattered a lot less after a few months, and as the wood darkened it became less obvious from most angles. Now, 17 years on it actually makes me smile with happy memories of the band I played with at the time. The guitar has collected many more less visible marks since then, but sounds better than ever and is still a fine looker. Keith

Its good to hear that the pain eases over time? . Annoyed with myself more than anything else. Probably won't be the last person it happens to and some of the experiences you guys have had I got off quite lightly. At least it still sounds sweet.

Sorry to hear of that accident - and the others mentioned on the thread. Seems like there's quite some guitar carnage going on out there. I'm lucky - I've never really had an acoustic guitar that has had the looks that makes me over-protective and worried thankfully. Not sure if I deliberately go for ones like that so that it doesn't hurt me too much when they get hurt. I did for a while have an electric that I was a bit precious about, and it seemed like I had to summon up the courage to open up the case and expose it to the dangers of the world. Maybe one of the reasons I didn't mind letting it go. Mark
