Having only relatively recently become interested (as in obsessed) with acoustic guitar, I missed Robbie Basho's tragically foreshortened heyday. One of his classic albums, "Art of the Acoustic Steel String Guitar 6 & 12" is about to be released. Here is an article an accompanying clip from a 1971 American TV show with him giving a virtuoso performance on a 12 string. Robbie Basho article and film clip

Thanks for posting about Robbie Basho. He's one my all time favourite steel string guitarists. It's been a good time for RB fans, in addition to the upcoming film, the two videos of his that were discovered there have been a slew of reissues recently. The Seal of the Blue Lotus, Twilight Peaks, Venus In Cancer, Visions of the Country have been reissued to vinyl (the latter two albums are my two favourites). Also the Takoma compilation was also reissued with him, Fahey, Bukka White by the name has one of his best tracks on it. The Art of the Acoustic Steel String Guitar 6 and 12, is a compilation of sorts, he rerecorded tracks from his earlier albums for it. Great album though, will pick up the reissue when I can. Here's my favourite track of Visions of the Country Here are some live sets of his, great quality. I think the two complete sets are stronger than the Bonn concert CD. www.robbiebasho-archives.info/en/special.htmlAn amazing thing about RB, he only ever had two guitars in his whole career. One 12 string, and one 6 string...

An absolute pleasure to post the links Brian, I could talk about my love for Robbie Basho endlessly!
Which CD's did you order? Venus in Cancer is sublime, it's probably my favourite of his instrumental albums.
The two full length concerts are also amazing, I think as a compilation they are a great insight to his career. On the RB Forum, the 'owner' of the live sets said he had many offers to press the live sets to CD and vinyl but refused to do so they would always be free so new listeners would be able to discover RB and to bypass the copyright issues that have been a huge barrier to rereleasing his work.

The first CD has arrived and I shall be giving it a try later. But the is a wonderful quote from Robbie Basho in the accompanying leaflet which appealed to me as a lifelong folkie:
"There’s one thing the Blues is afraid of and that's the pipes."
