Some of you know that tonywoods and I are a duo called Men In Black. We do about a gig a month, but we rehearse every week and, while the nerves always cut in we're pretty comfortable about performing our usual stuff. We also organise a monthly acoustic night in a local pub, and we usually have a fantastic lady come to that. She's called Polly Morris here's her website. She's very popular locally and has recorded a new cd that's being launched next Wednesday and we've been ask to play in support. That's fine. We'll do two 20 minute sets, and it's what we normally do, so we're prepared. The scary bit is, that we've been asked to take part in a "finale". Now there will be about a dozen proper musicians there on the stage. They all read the black dots, and they just sit and sight read and play. So what were we given? A score! It had all the chords written on it, but we're supposed to be part of this huge (to us) ensemble and we can't make mistakes in the timing, or it throws everything out. We've had Polly's musical director and manager come over and rehears us, we played it through with Polly on Monday, and we will probably play it once through with the whole ensemble before the audience come in. But I'm absolutely terrified!!! This is so far out of my comfort zone that that zone seems like a distant interstellar object! Still, it's all part of experiencing as many musical things as possible. Anybody got any advice?

Paul, I'm sure you and Charles will do just fine.
You have the chords - you know the chords - you can do the chords.
You can count, so you won't make mistakes in the timing.
You've played it through before - you can play it again.
Have a great evening - sounds like fun!
Keith

Now there will be about a dozen proper musicians there... ... so what? a dozen proper musicians plus another two proper musicians. The only thing that worries me is that I won't be able to come over and enjoy the music. Paul, I've witnessed tonywoods and you performing brilliant music several times now. I have no doubt at all that the Men In Black will fit in perfectly and make this evening as entertaining as ever. You shouldn't worry. I mean it.

Paul, you've played with me - so playing with real musicians ought to be a breeze Enjoy it if you can and, if you don't, just turn the volume in your amp down to 0...

I just say 'take it in your stride' (says he who nearly cracks up in front of others!). You appear full of confidence when you play and that's 50% of it. And you're good enough to get away with the odd 'mistake' (if you make any) and just carry on regardless. And, if you're playing with loads of others and don't have a solo part, then you can always pretend occasionally! No-one will notice if there's lots of you. Whatever, it will be great experience. Hope you enjoy it and good luck. PS hope you're not playing Wreck of the EF as you'd have to learn the words! John

Busk it! Just make sure you know what key they are playing! You two can do that standing on your heads!

I'm not worried any more! Turned out to be a brilliant evening, and the finale (with about a dozen musicians on the stage) came together as though by magic. Thanks for all your support guys n gals. It really was way outside my comfort zone.
