A while ago before I bought my Terry Docherty guitar I had a Gibson J-35, I had to sell it to fund the Docherty but I did miss it a bit, although I was glad I got rid of it because of the fact it had a very short saddle with little room for adjustment and it had a thin bridge which is not ideal for me, I wanted a slope shoulder dreadnought again for a while after selling the J-35, soon after selling it I discovered the Epiphone Texan through seeing a video of Justin Townes Earle with one, I thought it looked very nice, although I later came to find that he played an 'Elitist' Texan which can cost around £3-4,000 (quite ridiculous for a Japanese guitar) however I found out about the 'Inspired by 1964' Texan, it looked exactly like the Elitist except for the adjustable saddle but only cost around £300, I wanted one for a while and last week I bit the bullet and ordered one, along side 2 LR Baggs M1A pickups (I have one in all my guitars), I took a risk because I had never played one before, a shop had one in but only had the left handed version, it arrived and it looked very nice and it sounded okay, nothing great, however I went through the usual procedure of removing the undersaddle pickup and fitting the M1A, without that transducer in the way the guitar sounded amazing!, it sounds better than my old J-35, only not quite as loud, for a £300 guitar it is fantastic, I have really fallen for it.
The Inspired by 1964 texan has the same specs as the Gibson, Solid Spruce top, Solid mahogany back, mahogany neck, hand scalloped bracing, the only difference was that the Texan has laminate sides, the Gibson was all solid (I don't mind though) and the Epi a longer scale length with a belly up bridge.
I have to admit that this Epiphone is better than the Gibson, and not by any small margin, the Docherty is very loud with amazing sound and amazing bass but it also priced in 4 figure region, the Epiphone plays very nicely, looks brilliant and sounds great, and cost significantly less, so it may be seeing quite a few outings with me in the near future!
I'm happy
