Just been looking at Phils spec. for his custom Brook Lyn. It just got me thinking about why do 12 fret guitars have slotted heads on them. I `ve looked on google images and all the small bodied 12 fretters have a slotted headstocks. Is this neccessary? My other point about them is, how much is the bridge moved back by, is it the length of the two frets that you lose? Cheers Steve.

Probably custom and practice and/or appearance and fashion are the deciding factors I reckon! Maybe the (possibly) slightly lower weight of a slot headstock balances better especially with smaller 12 fret guitars? (Though not all are small!) Also, not all 12 fretters have a shifted bridge position - some have an elongated body - I believe that when Martin began to make 14 fretters after a period of making 12 fretters they just shortened the upper bout length to curve it in to meet the neck at the 14th fret instead of the 12th, leaving the rest of the body proportionand bridge position the same. Mainly tradition - they came from classical guitars with 12 frets clear originally and slotted headstocks. As for the bridge position you can go from a 14 frets clear body to a 12 frets clear by either keeping the same body and moving the bridge south or by keeping the bridge in the same position and extending the upper bout area by 2 frets to give a longer body or anywhere in between these two - depends on who makes the guitar. I refer you to my thread here on the Forum particularly the third one on Body Size and Shape. Modern makers do 12 frets clear with solid or slotted pegheads.

Modern makers do 12 frets clear with solid or slotted pegheads. I can confirm that 12-fretters can also come with solid pegheads and BIG bodies... Sybil being a particularly good example

Thanks for the replies, Keith, regarding the elogated body, i know that Martin do this and Taylor keep the body the same shape. So i suppose its horses for courses. Dave, just read the articles. really god stuff especially the `scale length` one, taking into account any issues the player may have, wrist pain etc. Thanks once again. Cheers Steve.

Hi Steve, Don't you have a 12fret parlor in Walnut with a solid headstock? Chris

I love the Santa Cruz 12 fret guitars and they do both slotted and solid headstocks which both look good to me. If you trawl through the Brook news section you will see Lyn's with both types and also different bridges as well. I went for the slotted since I am going for a more traditional look with a pyramid bridge as something different to my Brook Torridge. Having said that I am still agonising over the choices since I like them all Regards Phil

I'm a big fan of a pyramid bridge on a small bodied guitar, Brook did a nicely contoured one on my Creedy so I think you made the right choice there.

Hi Russ The Santa Cruz 12 fret guitars (1929 00 and Eric Skye) were a factor in me choosing a 12 fret this time. Could I ask which Santa Cruz you have? the Bashkin sounds interesting as well. Cheers Phil

I picked up the Santa Cruz used last year. It's their standard 00 with stika top and mahogany back and sides. Bought on eBay from a guitar shop in Florida and it made it safely to Sydney. It's short scale and a great roots guitar. I would love to try the Eric Skye model, as I really like his music. My Bashkin I commissioned. It's a long scale deeper body and redwood top and mahogany back and sides, I've had it two years and its the best guitar I own. It really works well in dadgad and open c turnings. I have a Bashkin OM as well which I've had 7 years. Check his website out I think he makes great guitars.

You'd find a welcoming audience here for any pics/recordings of your guitars that you might care to post welshruss! Keith
