I know strings aren't a very exciting subject, but I just wanted people to know that there is now a new rival for Elixir on the market. They are La Bella Vapour Shield: Typically the advertising blurb surrounding these is totally unfathomable as to how the coating is applied, but what I can gather is that they are not coated in a plastic condom like Elixirs. I have put a set of 12-52 on my Tamar, and they have totally transformed the guitar. A few observations during the initial installation and first week with them on: the sustain is amazing- I thought the 52 bottom would be too light, but this string is beefy and seems to sustain far longer than normal they are bright but without that irritating metallic brightness of Elixirs they feel very well balanced there doesn't seem to be any of that 'played in' period at work like Elixirs seem to need before they sound good- these sound great from the very start They claim that they last 5 times the length of normal strings, so are definitely up for a fight against Elixir. The only problem I forsee at the moment is that the heaviest set they do is this 12-52, so may not be good for alternate tuning. At £14 they are well worth trying. I got my set from Strings Direct. 'Tis pity there's no 13s.
Interesting to see how they go in competition with Elixir.

That's good news - I love La Bella strings, I'll give them a try.
Have you tried stringing up your guitar with both coated and uncoated to hear if there is any difference in brightness? I did that once with Elixirs and was surprised at how dull sounding the Elixirs were.

Glad you're happy with your new strings. I wonder if it's possible to modify anything without modifying its molecules? Still, you'll be able to enjoy peace of mind knowing that they're shielded from all the vapour.

Hi,
I bought a set of the La Bellas after your thread and have just put them on. Nice, nice, nice!!
My Taylor came with Elixirs supplied but I found them too slippy. After a few sets I was recommended D'Addario EXPs 80/20 (also coated) and much preferred these. I have occasionally dabbled with others as a try but always gone back to the D'Adds. I like both the Lights and extra lights and wouldn't go back to Elixirs.
But these La Bellas are just as nice as the D'adds on first play; at £14 a set they are more expensive than the D'Adds; I will see what they are like after an extended play and if they last as well as the D'Adds or longer and keep their tone and sustain I will definitely buy again. They might come down in price if the supply improves in UK.

Looks like the thread has resulted in a rush on them. They appear to be out of stock.
