I thought it might be fun thread to start - to see what technical challenges people are working on and what does and doesn't work... for instance I've been working on building speed (arpeggios, moving up and down the fretboard) with limited success for a while. Not had a lot of luck getting it past 90 (I need it to be at least 120, eventually 140). Currently trying "speed bursts", You do the piece at a comfortable slow pace and then speed up for a very short period then back to the slow pace, gradually increasing the length of the speedy bits as you get more comfortable. I've found that when i try to speed up the whole thing at once I get tense, things start to go wrong and it's downhill from there, but I stay more relaxed when it's only for a short period. Looks hopeful anyway. Other suggestions welcome!! Anyone else working on some new technical challenge?

Right now, it's learning to play octave mandolin in GDAD. Great fun, but challenging!

Right hand techniques in flat-picking. Cross-picking, mainly. Trying to get the speed up and struggling.

Ornamentation for celtic tunes. Hammer-ons pull-offs, slides, rolls, stops. And, of course, triplets. These are the toughest, especially if they're not on the 1st string.

Playing scales and melody using the four-fingers, four-frets method. I'm so used to moving up to second position and not using my pinky. It's a tough habit to break. I'm also moving onto more advanced flatpicking of fiddle tunes, with the goal being eventually to be comfortable playing up the neck.

Trying to find enough time in a day to play all these different instruments and play in all these different genres, styles, and tunings is a big enough challenge for me! I think it true to say I'm avoiding technical challenges to a large degree these days because it ruins what little time I have for enjoyment in actually playing music - short sighted of me I know (but that's why I wear glasses ). To be honest my technical challenge is just trying to play the right notes in the right order with some sort of attempt at expression! Plus getting used to using my thumb again instead of a thumbpick. Mark

I'm getting more comfortable playing straightforward acoustic fingerstyle folk arrangements. I love listening to boogie woogie piano and I mess around with boogie blues stuff on electric. Now's the time to put them together and try some fingerstyle boogie woogie, so I'm trying to learn Boogie Mysterioso by Mary Lou Williams arranged for solo fingerstyle guitar by Del Rey. I may be some time!

I didn't realise that once you can play "Kind Hearted Woman" many other Robert Johnson songs in A are virtually the same. Just different endings and beginnings.Once you get the thumb going on the bass strings that's half the battle. Tom Feldman has a great way of explaining and showing the tunes. So much so I didn't bother with the tab sheets.

Good luck with cracking this one, the very thought of it makes my fingers ache.

Yes, she plays really well and teaches in a nice upbeat way, the workshop must have been fun!

I was reading an excellent blog on practicing - geared to the classical guitar but I'm sure it applies to just about everyone. One of the techniques it strongly recommended is to use your phone.... record yourself - listen and watch what your hands are doing. I used to do this at one time but it put me off so much that I stopped. Anyway with an extra year of practicing under my belt I tried it again and found it to be quite useful. Some of the things I had no idea I was doing and am currently trying to eliminate: - various squeaks and creaks and damped notes that my ears definitely don't hear when I'm trying to play - my second finger likes to go into orbit when its not being used - gosh it's hard to stop it doing that! - I'm late even when i don't think I'm late And this is AFTER I've corrected a whole bunch of stuff I won't comment on the tone of the guitar - it sounds fine in real time so I"m going to put that down to the iPad
