Very sorry to hear that. He was one of the people who first got me interested in fingerstyle acoustic. Always loved listening to him.

This is terrible news, and like so many others I've spent my time trying to be as subtle and approachable....

oh no, no, another piece of me, of us, of good humanity is gone. I started loving fingerpicking staring at the black LP on the plate as if I could keep the notes directly from there....on day at least I came to the only one piece I could learn, this is now my little hommage. Play for us from there John.

Sad news, all my heroes are gradually going, Davy Graham, then Bert Jansch now John Renbourn. Martin Carthy, Wiz Jones and Michael Chapman are still going strong thankfully.
I remember seeing John and Bert many times in my younger days, both solo, together and in Pentangle with Jaqui McShee.
What a generation of player.

Good to see an obituary for JR in today's Telegraph... There is a pic of him playing at the Moseley Folk Fest in 2010...I don't recognise the guitar he's playing but it has a Fishman Rare Earth soundhole PU and there is an AER amp by his side which he is probably using as a monitor with a line out to the PA....a man of fine taste! The obit mentions his use of cut down table tennis balls stuck to his fingernails "as a way of giving his sound more resonance"... RIP....

Using table tennis ball pieces glued to the nails is an old classical guitar players trick, the cellulose of the ball gives a very natural fingernail sound, less harsh than say the more modern acrylics that some player now use. The curve of the ball is very similar to the nail. I know Julian Bream always carried some ready cut table tennis ball pieces and glue in his case for emergencies. Colin

Stunned. I was queuing up for the Stefan Grossman gig in Kendal last night and the chap in front and I got chatting about the John Renbourn/Wizz Jones gig that we'd both been at the week before. It seems neither of us were aware of the news until Stefan mentioned it during his performance.
Last week's concert was amazing - John and Wizz made jokes about being slow and stiff getting on to the stage but their performance was anything but. John Renbourn was typically relaxed; he played wonderful music and entertained with stories and anecdotes. It's very sad, but at least he was playing beautifully, singing and enjoying himself right up until the end.

I had the pleasure of talking to John at the Wadebridge folk festival, the day after a splendid gig he did with Wizz Jones and Clive Carol. A really lovely man. My very first encounter with John though was back in 1991. I had just graduated from university, and I was involved in a concert at Dartington with the guitar professor at the time, Steve Gordon. We were playing some classical guitar ensemble music (Leo Brouwer and Steve Reich). But, on the same bill that night was John Renbourne, though not as a top of the bill performer. In fact he only played a couple of pieces. He was a student, just like the rest of us, having gone to Dartington to study composition. I didn't really know who he was at the time, but of course since, I am amazed this towering icon in the world of finger style guitar should have been so humble as to engage with the student concert in this way. I got the impression talking to him that he was a true gentleman, highly intelligent, and as humble as the story above suggests. He also had some very nice things to say about a couple of Brook guitars that he heard that day as well Robbie
