Whilst visiting my old pal Val, at Northern acoustics, he put another interesting Martin in my hands. This time it was a "000-28K Authentic 1921" , model. A 5K+ model, of all solid Koa. 12 frets to the body, with 1 7/8" width nut. All the spec is to an historic 1921 model, including cow-hide glue and no truss-rod. For that reason, it comes with 11s. Being all koa, this slothead is a handsome beast. Although nowhere near as handsome as the Koa/Cedar James Goodall, I once owned. This is a finger-stylists guitar. And even played, with flesh, rather than nail, it sounded very good. The tone bloomed out of it. Very solid and very melodious. Warm and woody, yet still nice and airy, if that makes sense. The ebony fingerboard, with wide string spacing and super comfortable neck, made it a real pleasure to play. I couldn't argue either way, as to whether it's worth it's price tag. I'm more flat than finger picker but it was a magnificent instrument. Also whilst there, I had a go on a Faith Naked Venus twelver. The basic trim range, with all-solid spruce/hog. A nice, small bodied twelver, with very good spec , for a sub £500 guitar. Sounded very nice but nowhere close to my new Yammy, which is only about 20 quid more.

The title of this thread is misleading, compounded by the beard. I thought it referred to a substitute for our revered leader...

You beat me to it Keith ! A seriously beautiful guitar. Does the team think that Martin should make one concession to modernity and fit a truss rod? I'd be nervous about paying 5 grand for a guitar without one.

Pre-aged braces? Hmmmm. Interesting. At least they've got a clever abbreviation for it. Makes it sound like car! I can't imagine that it would make all that much of a difference, but I'm no luthier. Whatever. It's a pretty guitar and I'm sure I'd enjoy playing it. I do like me a hardwood top.

Does the team think that Martin should make one concession to modernity and fit a truss rod? I posted a question similar on the AGF and it turned out to be a really controversial thread! www.acousticguitarforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=352157Some interesting info in there if you are looking for an answer (in short, there is no definite answer) Back to the important details... The beard is indeed wonderful. Not rarely I make such a statement but a beard like that needs some grey hairs for it realise it's destiny to carry on the work of Gandalf and Merlin.

I played one of these a couple of weeks ago. Like other all koa guitars I've tried, it had a very distinctive sound which I liked a lot. Whether it's worth the money is entirely subjective, but I did think the tuners were disappointing - they appeared to be the same ones Martin use on the 15 series slot heads (at a fifth of the price).

They've got one of these in gak that has just come in, when I popped in last weekend en ex assistant was trying it out while one the current assistants was raving about it, beautiful looking and sounding guitar, it's sort of has the sparkle of koa but was still warm in the mid and bass. Mind you at over £5K it's should be good, you could buy two new Brooks or similar for the money!
