Saturday saw me strolling around Soho again — guitar shops may I add!
I played a lot of old vintage Gibsons, nice guitars but not nice enough at the price they were going for.
The one used guitar I was impressed with was a cutaway jumbo by UK luthier Alex Wills who I'd not heard of before. The guitar was built in 2010 but judging from the belt wear on the back it has been played very regularly, probably by a pro. A nice guitar on sale at Wunjos for a decent price.
Of the new guitars I was — once again — impressed by the new Guilds. The F30 I played was a great guitar, OM sized dimensions but with a very distinct sound. At £1500 it seemed very good value and stood up well to Larivees. Under its new stewardship this seems to be a brand on the way back!

I think he's stopped building guitars now but I played a couple of Alex Willis' guitars at Towersey festival a few years ago, he had a stall in the instrument tent. Difficult to get a really good impression of sound in a tent, but they seemed nicely made and very playable, I seem to remember one being priced at £1350 - how much is the one in Wunjos?

Alex had the stand next to mine at the Cheltenham Acoustic Guitar Show in 2007 - nice man. I liked an OM sized guitar he had there with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides. He also has written a book "Step-by-step Guitar Making".

My friend David Crozier has 2 of Alex Willis' guitars in his shop in Eastbourne. Both Brazilian rosewood. Very reasonable price.
