So it arrived today. It needs a good clean! I'm tempted to sand the top back, the action is too high so that needs fettling and I'd like to fit a pickup which will be tricky given the funky sound hole. The good points are that even with the old strings fitted it sounds good - plenty loud and full and the neck is very comfy - more like an electric.

When it's fettled I will. I need to sort the action and make it more playable before I let anyone hear it. Hopefully I can take enough off the bridge to get it more comfortable.

Congrats John - have a good honeymoon!
Assuming neck relief is OK, or can be made so, if you still run out of wiggle room on the saddle for lowering the action, is the bolt on neck made in such a way that you can add a thin shim to change the neck angle slightly?

Keith No - the necks are glued and bolted so it would be as big a job as a regular neck joint. Shame as that would have been a great feature. The relief is about right but I might gain a smidgen with lighter strings. I took a couple of shims out form under the saddle last night but it still needs to come down. I was in the mood for sanding as well so started work on the top - not sure whether I'll do a nitro or oil finish - I'm thinking a satin oil finish might be nice and easy. The other big question I'm pondering is how I'm going to add electrics - the sound hole is quite small so it's going to be an awkward job.

Is it weird that i would do all the work to get it playing as best as i could but probably leave the dirt. I really like pristine new acoustics, but i also really really like beaten up guitars, john butler style stuff. John Gomm's lowden has definitely gone too far! ( i know it's from playing and gigging but still)

I know what you mean - my old ovation is well battered and my main gigging electrics have many battle scars - I guess the difference is that the dings have been done when I was using the guitars and not someone else's if that makes any sense. I'm also very interested in making, modding and refinishing guitars - that gives me almost as much fun as playing them so i bought it as much as a project as to use - I'm almost finished redoing the top on a les paul standard right now and have a steinberger type and 335 copy sat waiting for a new finish when that's done.
But if I get it finished I'll definitely gig it this summer.
