Does anyone here have experience of these? I just tried one at Scayles in Edinburgh. It sounded and played really nice: very warm and bass-rich. I preferred it to the rose wood version (£100 more) although that model is probably better equipped for playing lead on tunes with its more punchy trebley tone.
Designed by Martyn Banks of Oakwood instruments and hand-crafted by top luthiers - in Vietnam! And there's the rub. Or is it? £649. Worth a throw?

Keith, the choice of ukes was so great I was unable to reach a decision.
I have banjo photos too Martin :-)
So, would you be put off by the Asian provenance?

I have banjo photos too Martin :-) So, would you be put off by the Asian provenance? Let's see the banjer piccies!!! I wouldn't be put off at all if it was well-made, sounded great, played beautifully and was reasonably priced. You could get a very nice English-made one for double the price, but, well... it would be DOUBLE the price You know what I mean...

I know what you mean! Thanks Martin, those were my thoughts too.
You'll have to wait a day or two for the banjo pics. Try and relax or they'll be anticlimactic....

I wouldn't be put off by the provenance, Andy. There's a few Asian made but UK designed ranges of instruments around. e.g. Hobgoblin sell mandos designed by Phil Davidson made in (I think ) Vietnam, under the Ashbury brand - v nice they are too. Not sure I'd trust a banjo though wherever it was made.... Keith

I wouldn't be put off either. There are some nice mando-family instruments being made in Asia. My first foray into mandolins was an Asian-made octave sold under the TAMCO brand, and a well-made instrument it was. Just remember that like any factory-made instruments, you're likely to find a few really nice ones and a few real turkeys, so it's always better if you can try it in person before you buy.
