I'm rubbish at quizzes, but here goes - 1. About 9 different makes of acoustic guitar? (I ignored the violins, and the electrics and the amps) 2. 032 in front of a large Japanese (made under licence) one of some sort - ? S7. 3. Breedlove something or other. Certainly is a miserable night - v wet and v windy - not nice! Keith

1. I think I can identify six (Larrivee, Gibson, Breedlove, Atkin, Martin, Lowden) plus another 3 I can't identify so I'll also say 9. 2. Dunno - a cedar topped one in the middle and a spruce one in front. 3. Breedlove something - maybe Masterclass Concert?

Hmm. I've lost the bit of paper I had them all written down on, but the answer to Q1 was 9, so well done. The Lowdens are a O35 in front and a G9 behind. They were either from 1984 or 1994 and 1972 or 1982 respectively. I played them both. The old G9 was absolutely wonderful and if I'd had a spare £2200 (or £2400) I would have snapped it up. Was that made in Japan then Keith - it obviously has a different signature? The O35 was going for about £3000 I believe. Well done with the Breedlove. Yes indeed a Masterclass. It had only come in the day before and I was the first to play it. A cool £4000. I preferred the G9 to be honest, but fair do's I'm sure the Breedlove will come into its own in due course. Attachment DeletedThis is The Music Gallery in Berwick-upon-Tweed, the kind of store you could quite happily while away half a day and not notice the passage of time. The first display when you walk in is the usual selection of "affordable" (I hate that word but there I am using it) guitars, but when you walk through you start to discover all sorts of wonderful things. An excellent second-hand, no doubt pre-loved, section which the owner, Brian Martin, clearly revels in sharing with you. Eventually you go upstairs and discover his cafe, quirky little clothes-shop and a most impressive collection of old wireless sets. The cafe also doubles as the gig and open-mic room, complete with p.a. If you haven't already done so, vikingblues, it's well worth a run down the A1!

Sounds like a really interesting shop! Thanks for more about the Lowdens! here's a bit more now I know what they are - Lowden G9 - cedar/ovangkol, which would be 1982 rather than '72. (GL production models didn't appear till around 1976.) Between 1980 and '85 luthiers in the S.Yairi workshop near Nagoya, Japan made Lowden guitars under licence from GL, to his designs. Pinned bridge. Lowden O35 - the 35 series could be almost any wood combo you like, including spruce/rosewood, as per O32, but posher bits of lumber and trim. That would be 1994 as opposed to '84. Many of the Jap guitars are lovely - I've played a fair few, and am not surprised that you liked the one you tried. Silly price though. Maybe £1750 more like? Worth offering £1500 and watching their faces.... (The O35 is way overpriced too.) Any ukes? Keith

Curious to know what the one with the Brie-shaped bridge is - looks familiar but I can't place it.
Also the (mahogany or sapele?) slothead with the pyramid bridge on the left?

Thanks for the info Keith: very interesting. I wondered if the prices were on the high side. Brian the owner said he was taking the Lowdens to a festival in Coldstream and he reckoned he'd sell them both. I couldn't check the ukes out as I'd forgotten my ear-plugs

I believe the brie bridged guitar is one of Gibson's Mark series from the seventies. They were quite controversial at the time and had some reliability issues I think, but are now regarded quite affectionately by some collectors.

If you haven't already done so, vikingblues, it's well worth a run down the A1! Thanks for pointing this one out - it had totally slipped under my radar. If I get the old GAS pangs returning at some point (none at all at present thankfully) it could be well worth a visit. Mark
