Popped in today, but only had time to play two guitars. I chose Martin Simpson's old Sobell MS model and an Avian Dove.
The Sobell was fantastic; the African Blackwood back and sides really helped it sing, loads more reverb, sustain and bass than the BR model. It was built 2006 and I remember at the time that MS wanted it in AB so he could easily travel to the States with it. Looks a bit battered and has some repaired scratches, but all cosmetic. The best MS model I've played.
The Avian is good value - sitka spruce and rosewood, designed by Michael Bashkin, well made and costs just over a grand. I'm always looking for decent cheaper guitars for students, this would fit the bill, but since the price increase would be in the 'major purchase' for most. Well set up and a lively tone - decent mids and trebles - for a smaller body, the bass was fine; overall it seemed pretty well balanced.
Ben Montague, at the helm, is a top bloke, great to meet him and very helpful.
Well, there you go - two extremes in price and both good value, worth a visit.
