Well we foolishly battled through bad snow over the stretch of the M62 which is the highest in England and got to see these two last night and what a good night it was. However, I must say that in our opinion Tommy's sound from the Maton's let him down somewhat apart from a couple of his gentler numbers in the encore. Fortunately all the stuff they did together Tommy played an all mahogany job (Martin possibly) with a soundhole pickup and that was fine. Tommy's solo sound was too loud (bass hit the chest) and very harsh to our ears. Martin Taylor was exceptional in all respects solo and together and we were somewhat dissapointed to see Tommy have possibly twice as much more solo time and the encore was Tommy on his own again which we thought was strange. Only then did I look at the tickets and it said 'Tommy Emmanuel featuring Martin Taylor' which explained it. I guess Tommy has the biggest pull commercially etc. Don't get me wrong here because I am a big TE fan, and of course the sound of Tommy solo didn't help, but in a show like this where his time was a bit restricted I was disappointed to see him go through quite a few of his 'guitar gymnastic numbers' such as a 10 minute Beatles medly with blistering runs etc when he has so, so many superb peices to chose from. Perhaps having seen him a few times the flash stuff is not as impressive possibly? So to summarise Martin Taylor solo excellent, together excellent, Tommy solo 'fair to midlin' - it was still a great night and well worth going to see I bought the new CD 'The Colonel And The General' and it is absolutely superb - can't recommend it enough Regards Phil
