Off to see Show of Hands in Nottingham tonight; must be one of the few people on the forum who has not seen them so looking forward to it. Nice meal first with friends. Should be a good night.

I can pretty much guarantee an excellent night, John. I've never been disappointed by a SoH gig. It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts afterwards.

FFJ I've only seen half of them - Paul Downes and Phil Beer (early to mid 1970's I think).

It's been 2 or 3 years since I last saw them - they used to pass my way every 6 months or so. I've never seen them put on a show that was less than first-class. Enjoy!

I've just noticed that they're on in my local city of Truro on 27th Nov, the same night as Martin Simpson is appearing at nearby Devoran. The local folkies, who have to wait months for a decent act to make the long run down the A30, will be tearing themselves in two. I know where I'll be though.

Better get booked up soon then as SOH gigs usually sell out quickly... Thanks for the heads up on the MS gig..I see he's also playing Calstock the following night which is nearer for us...not seen him live so a good chance to go along and see why is so popular!

Hi,
A review was requested so here's a summary. (And another hello to Paul 007 who I saw briefly at the interval).
I must admit to going with a bit of trepidation; firstly because 'acoustic folk and roots' isn't my immediate first choice of genre; secondly because I don't know their music at all and I tend to favour gigs where I know the songs a bit. I needn't have worried as the show was brilliant; Steve and Phil were joined by Miranda on double bass and vocals. There wasn't a single number I didn't like; I particularly remember Crow on the Cradle, Country life and Santiago. Great variety of instruments used with skill including mandocello and a South American uke-like instrument similar to a Lanzarote timple. They finished with an encore without any amplification, just Steve and Phil at the front of the stage. Steve singing Ralph Mct's The Setting, Phil with Mary from Dunbloe, and then both songs intermingled and overlaid; very effective and touching.
I'll definitely be back for more. And not a finger in the ear in sight!

Ah, yes! Those who have seen SOH on a number of occasions have 100% confidence that others will like them. They have worked so hard over the years at both their songs and their stage craft.
I reckon Steve is the best songwriter in the UK today.
