I'm thinking of replacing the Grover tuners on my Breedlove: I'd really like a set of Schaller or Gotoh with ebony buttons. I'm not finding them easy to locate online so I'm wondering if any of you can point me in the right direction. Are these things one size fits all?

No, it's not one size fits all for paddle head guitar tuners, the right size of bushings is an issue. I'm fairly sure the Gotohs would require a specific reamer to make the holes larger, but I think the Schaller Grand Tunes would be drop in replacements. You can get them here www.emma-music.com/schaller,us,4,88-3-SCH-5021224230.cfm

These are well worth a look too... www.rubnertuners.com/I replaced the tuners on my Mandocello with these recently and am very impressed with their overall quality and smoothness... reasonably priced too... Dave White recommended them in another thread [re a new De Faoite build] which is how I came across them....thanks Dave.

You don't have to buy from Stewmac of course, but they do have very handy accurate measurements for the range of tuners they sell. Might be helpful to see how these measurements compare with your existing tuners. www.stewmac.com/Hardware_and_Parts/Tuning_Machines/Guitar_and_Solid_Peghead/As ewh rightly says, the bushes are often different, but also the screw hole positions are likely to differ - an easy fix, but I know how twitchy you get at the mention of drills and stuff Andy .... If you can't find a set of what you want with ebony buttons, various places do replacement buttons for Schaller and Gotoh. Keith

Aaarrghh, the D-word....feeling faint.... I'm really grateful to you all for the advice. So much choice! Have I really found Schaller gold with ebony buttons retailing at $146.25 for ONE?? Tell me that isn't true. Please. I suspect I'll be going for something from Rubner. No sense in having expensive tuners on a guitar with a re-sale value of about £400. And if there is the slightest bit of the D-word required I'll be paying my guitar doctor to fit them for me Much more research needed: work in progress. Thanks again alig, earwighoney, ocarolan and andrewjw.

I'd use Gotohs as well. Should fit into existing holes, great action and affordable.
