Just imagine how bad it is when you can't remember words to songs that you have written yourself!

Interesting thread.
I do ok in general i think but I definitely have bugbear songs that elude me no matter how hard i try over the years. They tend to be the ones with a lot of repetition and lines that are similar.
For example, despite having played it hundreds of times and tried many methods of remembering it, I can almost never get the words to Cold Cold Heart in the right order. It's only four verses too. Gah. I think it's because they're all kind of similar in content and tone and there's no real progression or story to the song.
I find tunes with a definite narrative arc much easier to remember because my brain goes "Oh this is the verse where the protagonist does this... and then this happens... and then it's the middle 8..." etc. I did once try out a method whereby i'd add my own little story or word association thing to make the connection between one line and the next. I used to do it on Kathy's Song by Paul Simon. That kind of worked. I might try it with Cold Cold Heart actually.

I forget my own words a lot more than I forget covers. The reason I find for that is that I generally only cover songs that I LOVE. At some point I've thought "My GOD that's a great song. What a great Lyric!" Then set about learning it, singing it repeatedly and enjoyed the process.
For my own songs, either it's been something that slipped out easily and I haven't given too much thought to, OR if it was a difficult birth it might have been though countless versions and re-drafts, none of which I'm overly happy with. When it comes to trying to recall which one of the two dozen slightly tweaked versions you finally settled on being the least unhappy with it's not always easy.

I've identified that as the problem with trying to remember the words to songs that I've written.
