I've delivered my Christmas present to my Lowden a couple of days early by dropping the TV remote control on it from a height of....ooh, all of half an inch. I reckon that if there were a softness equivalent to Mohs Scale of Hardness, cedar would rate on a par with warm butter. Now where are those felt-tipped furniture pens....?

Andy P ...I'd be inclined to not try to colour it Andy - a year from now it will have darkened a fair bit on its own, especially if kept out of its case. Chin up, and all the best to you and Helen for Christmas! Keith & Viv

Thanks Keith. I'm finding that the more I ding, the less I care! Happy Christmas to you and Viv and the family

Ouch! Glad to see you saying that you're not feeling too bad about it. I recall walking into the living room early in the year and seeing my Lowden fall sideways on its own onto a wooden chair and then to the floor. I was surprised how little it made me panic. A plus of where I am now gear-wise is I only have cheap guitars so it doesn't matter at all what happens! Mark

Shame!
On my unvarnished cedar topped guitar I find a very light application of tung oil makes small dings pretty much disappear ...possibly the pro luthiers on here may have better suggestions.

Ouch Breedlover you seem to have got over it very quickly Well thejamsinger I considered ocarolan 's advice to do nothing as it would look better in 12 months time (I couldn't possibly live with it that long!) and chose to ignore it (sorry Keith). I very carefully retouched it with a furniture marker and it looks a whole lot better. Okay this photo shows it from the best angle and it can be more obvious according to how the light hits it, but I can live with this. The thing is these cedar tops are so incredibly fragile that I would be on tenterhooks the whole time if it was pristine. As I have demonstrated I'm sufficiently clumsy that it would get dinged sooner or later (anyway when I bought it new I got £400 knocked off as it already had the tiniest of marks). Life's too short

I used to have an old Lowden S22c a lovely guitar that I didn't particularly get on with.
It had some shortcomings which did not affect the tone, The original swirly plastic machine heads had been replaced with chromed Shcallers which !ooked nasty. There was a 6" arced gouge on the cedar top starting near the hole in the bridge for the top E string. This was an extremely tight fit until I had the hole enlarged slightly and had no further problems with string changes.
The most annoying problem with this guitar was that the mahogany on the edge of the cutaway had split very slightly, enough to snag a cloth when wiping the guitar down.
One other interesting characteristic of the instrument was that the tone would become slightly muffled when the air was humid.
This was a good guitar despite the above but just not suited to me.
I am sure that whoever has it now is enjoying it.

Horses for courses Ged. I guess it's like anything else: if we all liked the same guitars, cars, women/men, etc there wouldn't be much variety in the world. I find my Lowden temperamental at times but I love her all the same
