Haven't tried one yet, Dave. Hopefully there's an Atkin owner on here who can help out

I've played a couple of Atkins, though it was a few years ago so I couldn't say how well my experience reflects the current ones.
As with a lot of higher-end guitars, I think it depends very much on what you want to play. The Atkins I played were outstanding for flatpicking/rhythm, but less impressive when played fingerstyle. This isn't meant as a criticism - I think that a lot of really good guitars lean towards certain kinds of playing. The professional musicians who use Atkins seem to include a lot of good flatpickers (e.g. Kris Drever), and based on the ones I tried this makes sense to me.
Like I said, this was a few years ago and more recent models might be different. The ones I played were really good guitars if they suit your playing style.

I haven't played one but would really like to. They seem like they would fit my style pretty well...

A friend has one and I was slightly underwhelmed when I played it, but it had a pretty narrow nut so didn't really suit my playing style anyway.
He seems to produce an awful lot of different models, but the ones I've played in shops seemed to suffer more than most from sharp fret ends, which I really dislike, so I've never got beyond initial impressions I'm afraid. He certainly makes a good job of those vintage finishes, if that's your kind of thing.

I was checking out guitar and railway mags in Smiths today - the Guitarist mag Songwriter Special Issue has a review of Atkin guitars. They seemed to like them, but then you never do find a mag review slating anything do you?

There are a lot of different models and that is a bit bewildering. I've played a Gibson J style (basic adornments) at Forsyths, which I thought had that vintage Gibson sound. I played another Gibson style at Ivor Mairants and it didn't do anything for me at all. I have played the OM a couple of times and that is a very good guitar. I've heard good reports of the AA and the J45 copy.
The are worth looking at but should be auditioned alongside Brook and others, difficult because you have to find them side by side. Mairants often have Brook, Santa Cruz in as well. I've never seen an OM in a store — I guess that model is the most popular.

I tried a couple in Intersound in Dursley alongside a couple of Brooks (Taw and Tamar). The Brooks were fantastic but I didn't like the Atkins. Nothing particularly wrong with them just they were completely different from the Brooks which I loved (the Tamar was my second favourite of all the guitars I tried after the Fylde which I eventually chose).
As others say, the moral is to try before you buy. They all look wonderful in pictures but the difference in the playing experience is immense.

As others say, the moral is to try before you buy. They all look wonderful in pictures but the difference in the playing experience is immense. Oddly enough, when I bought my Brook, I was going into the shop to try a couple of small bodied Lowdens (which I didn't like), but money was burning a hole in my pocket and I tried quite a lot of small bodied guitars, one of which was an Atkin. It was fine, but Brooks seem to have a sort of shimmer in their tone, and it left the Atkin sounding a little flat by comparison. I have an idea that the Atkin I left on the hanger was the one that pnut bought. I've heard him play it and it sounds great, just not in my hands. Strange how we all have different tastes, isn't it? And as we so often hear on this forum, you have to try the guitar you buy to be sure it meets your needs.
