I, like so many UK luthiers did my initial training at the London College of Furniture; that was in the 1970s. Over the years, the course and the educational establishment’s name has changed, but it is (was) still a place where those wishing to study the art of musical instrument repair and making (not just fretted instruments) could start their career. So, needless to say I was both saddened and angered to hear that musical instrument making is being wound-up and the building sold-off. There are very few opportunities in the UK for aspiring luthier; so if you feel inclined there is an on-line petition to sign. CLICK HERECheers Gary

I'm sorry to hear that young people will have fewer opportunities to learn these skills. I've signed.

I read about CASS a few months ago. Sadly I'm not surprised, shutting it down just seems to be the way of London, a city which seems to be hellbent on losing it's artistic elements. IMO, the turning point was the demolition of the Astoria venues.
Small sized supermarkets, slick new build apartments, gastropubs selling £5 pints are the future.
(I'm a C.O.G. for a good reason...)

This has made me really cross. "The cost of everything and the value of nothing" is the expression that springs to mind. Signed!

They are no doubt making a shed load of case from the sale of the site and have given themselves massive salary increases/bonuses signed

That is bad news. I was just talking about the course today with a guy from Vintage and Rare in Bath who studied with Dave King there.

At the risk of sounding parasitical - if this does happen then it'd be good to know what happens to the equipment

Thanks for all of the support. The site is in the Commercial Road- between the City of London and Docklands, so no doubt worth a few quid. What a shame that an asset is sold and the money not put back into the departments that were housed there. Thanks again, Gary
