I'm not normally so technologically backward (having bought my first PC over 30 years ago) but, admittedly a little late in the day, I bought my first smart-phone today. I wonder if any guitar-builders amongst you know of any useful apps I ought to get for it.

Not a builder, but on my iPhone I have a tuner program called 'Cleartune' which I have found to be very useful. Seems to be more accurate than my clip on physical tuners, and allows you to alter the type of tuning you apply to primitive instruments like guitars which are never really in tune (I have mine set on 'Equal Temperament'). Good for fiddling with compensation and so on, too.
There are numerous DAW programs if you want to record directly onto your phone, although to get good results you probably need to have some sort of external microphone.
There's also an audio signal generator program called 'AudiosigGen' which can be used to annoy bats and identify how deaf you are. I've discovered from this that anything above 12500 Hz is now a mystery to my ears, which could be put down to a combination of age and electric guitars.

Builder or not, very useful stuff, Kym. I'll certainly be testing my ears!

Yes, mel, I've been wondering about something like that. Looks very accurate. I'll have a look. Thanks for your trouble. Rob

Rob , I just have a couple of tuners on my phone that I use a lot, The aforementioned Strobotune, very accurate and useful, the other is the Planet Waves TuneUp which is the one I use most. I have checked both apps against laboratory strobes and they are both extremely accurate. I use them most for setting up compensation. The other thing I use a lot on my phone for guitar building is the notes app, yes I know you can use a pencil and paper, but having somewhere always in my pocket that I can put measurements down, or reminders is really useful.

Thanks, Colin. I've got a weighty Planet Waves strobe tuner that plugs into the mains so I can believe their app would be good. And that's also 2 votes for the Strobotune so I'll have to look at both. In my dreams I actually see myself setting compensation at the nut, too; maybe get I nice big jumbo zero-fret and have a go at it with a file...
