I'm a massive fan of the video exchange type of online guitar lesson. It's a wonderful way to get really cost effective lessons from world class players. My annual sub with Bryan Sutton expires tomorrow and I've decided not to rejoin - nothing wrong with the school, far from it. It's brilliant. I've learned so much from Bryan, not just about flat-picking, but about musicianship, song-writing, performance, and so much more. He's a great guy, a wonderful teacher, and I'd highly recommend his school. But I rarely flatpick these days and it's time for a new teacher - ideally a fingerpicker. I thought about joining Martin Taylor's school - I have a ton of his albums and he's a great guy, too, but it may be more aimed at the jazzer than the country thumb-picker. Any other ideas? Anyone out there taking fingerstyle lessons with someone they'd recommend - ideally a two-way environment?
Cheers D

Woody Mann? He's not a bad player! Edit: Not that I'm taking lessons or that I can recommend him, just that I was somehow aware he did the video exchange thing...

Thanks for the recommendation Keith - Skype lessons work surprisingly well, let me know if you're interested delb0y. Fingerstyle is my thing and willing to help out in any way.

One that springs to mind is Howard Emerson. I know that Mark Thompson has had video exchanges with him. Another would be Stuart Ryan; he's doing a lot of video stuff and posting on Facebook right now. Stuart's more contemporary fingerstyle, while Howard's more old school. That's how I'd define it anyway. I'm probably going to re-up my sub with the Bryan Sutton school. I really should make more use of it. I seem to go through growth spurts. A lot of it's down to time and getting the recording set-up in place. I too have learned a lot so far, but I could definitely get a lot more value out of it. Besides that, I'm doing a Coursera online course called Modern Musican. It's a more theory-based thing, but I'm really enjoying it so far. www.coursera.org/specializations/modern-musician

Just a word of caution about the subscription video courses - I think they represent good value and are very beneficial if you have the discipline to make use of them. From my experience, my year's subscription to Mike Marshall's mandolin school hasn't been worthwhile, simply because I've had no time to devote to it (my own fault), so it is wasted money. If you're paying for (virtual) face to face lessons, yes it's more expensive, but at least you're almost guaranteed to turn up!

I've decided to continue working my way through the Richard Saslow book (almost there!), then tackle some John James material that I already have. Once that's done I'll look again at some of these teaching options. It's all part of the long term plan so no rush :-)
