I came across the new open gear tuners from Gotoh, the SX510 series which are soon to be released which has the following description 'It is said that the performance and durability of open-gear machine heads is inferior to sealed-gear (Rotomatic) types. Because the bushing is physically separate from the machine head body it is difficult to accurately position the string post through it when mounting onto the guitar. To solve these problems the SXB510 series includes a centering guide at the base of the body to ensure a flush fit combined with Rock Solid string posts. Also, the SXN510 series employs a nut mount system and can be installed as a direct replacement into the same holes drilled for Rotomatic style tuners. The improved performance and durability which the SX510 series provides, thanks to GOTOH’s unique design and manufacturing, gives you the chance to experience a sound you’ve never heard before..' I'm not sure I understand the details. Does anyone with a technical appreciation maybe davewhite be able to work out whether the description above seems to indicate a good new design or is it just a marketing ploy? Not that I have much reason to be suspicious of Gotoh and their tuners, the tuners I've had from them have all been superb. www.g-gotoh.com/international/?btp_product_category=sx510-series

While I can't answer the performance question, these do look very nicely made and I like the finish options too.

From this picture on the link you gave it seems that there is a bushing guide built into the tuner plate. Some tuners I've had from Rubner have had this feature. It means you have to use a stepped drill to make a hole for them on the back of the peghead when installing - similar to how you have to prepare the top of the peghead for tuners with tuner bushings. I don't see how this will be more stable than open geared tuners that have bushings on the top of the headstock - this centres the tuners in a similar manner. Installing the new Gotohs is more complex as will be fitting them as replacements - not and easy DIY procedure That said I like Gotoh tuners - my go to together with Rubners.

Dave,
Thanks for the reply. As perfect and informative a response as I could have wished! It makes perfect sense.
