Hi,
Just seen that BBC4 this coming Friday 18th March at 8.00 pm is a new programme .'John Williams at the BBC'.
This is a combination of clips from various performances from JW on BBC shows including duets with Bream, and the famous sketch with Eric Sykes (hilarious). Worth watching or setting the recorder I reckon.

You are so lucky over there - we never get to see these "popular" hits in the US - not lowbrow enough....

Leo great idea - but then - there is the issue that apple has thoughtfully limited the number of times you can switch between UK and US formats before you are completely kiboshed. Last time I was in the UK I switched to watch the archived BBC stuff on the web and discovered to my horror that they were limiting the number of times I could switch ... I wasn't using VPN though so maybe it would work... or I"ll save it for my next visit

I really enjoyed the programme, but when Julian Bream said that John Williams was an enigma to him as a person, I would have loved to know what he meant by that. Really enjoyed the music and the comedy.

I was a great fan of John Williams and had his CD's until I was burgled and the buggers ran off with over 300 cd's in total. I just love listening to him play, a bit of a legend in my book.

Well worth a watch.
Loved the 50s clip "a rock and roll guitarist can be turned out in 12 hours flat, the classical player must devote at least 12 solid years to patient study". I recognise the Spanish Guitar Centre in the clip where Len Williams gave lessons - I met him there once as a teenager, very nice and complimentary man.
I also understand why JW plays a Smallman after hearing the nylon string Ovation amplified in his Sky days, very similar sound (in the film amplified, of course not in reality acoustic).
I had the record Bridges in the 80s, just JW, but shows the influence of Sky - a lot of it probably considered naff these days.
Never seen him make a 'mistake' live or filmed, so 54.35 was a shock and a pleasant surprise.
I'm off to see JW play with Derek Gripper in June - he creates his own style of African traditional music, should be interesting.

Thoroughly enjoyed the programme, it did make me realise why I always preferred Julian Bream though, bit more fire in his belly, and of course he played lute as well(and not a Smallman!)
