The good thing about distance selling regulations is you can try a guitar that you just can't get locally and have a safety net if things are faulty. How's this for intonation?! Less than beautuful harmonyI've encountered progressively worse intonation when moving up the fretboard before on an electric guitar, but that's easily fixed with individual saddles on a tune-omatic bridge. To have it on an acoustic guitar with an already compensated saddle? A small size guitar tuned ADGCEA in case you wonder why the notes are quite high. Goes back on Monday. Mark

Ibanez Piccolo! Seemed like a fun thing for the not too far off birthday. I've sort of been put off now - and it's also not widely available anyway. Mark You were sure getting some funky sounds there Maybe I should have kept it and arranged some Stockhausen pieces? Mark

Ibanez Piccolo! Seemed like a fun thing for the not too far off birthday. I've sort of been put off now - and it's also not widely available anyway. Mark What a shame - but a quick Google showed at least three online sources claiming they have stock for the Ibanez Piccolo. If your supplier has further examples I'd exp0lain the problem to them and ask for a replacement that doesn't exhibit the problem, or a full refund inc postage if they don't. Actually it shouldn't be too difficult to fix. Probably a little work on action and esp nut could do the job, plus or minus some experimentation with string gauge. But if it's new then it deffo should be right when you buy it and not need fixing. Intriguing little thing, but why they kept the nut so narrow is beyond me. My Tacoma Papoose, also designed to be tuned A-A has a nut width more like what you'd expect at the 5th fret on a normal guitar. I usually keep mine tuned even higher, B-B, which is really interesting. I hope you can get this sorted, Mark - it should be a really fun thing, and for not too much money. (Or maybe that's the basic problem?) Keith

I'm on the full refund including postage Keith and it was the last one in stock at the supplier. I'd had it in my basket for a couple of days and it was showing two left in stock - it then dropped to one and I panicked and hit the buy button while still not 100% sure whether it was a good choice! There were a few spruce top versions I saw available on line, but only one other source for the Ovangkol one that I fancied. I tend to only risk buying from places on line that have very clear (and generous) returns policies which reduces the choice too. The nut was cut too high (not unexpected at the price), but I reckoned that adjusting that would not have helped as the intonation was progressively worse moving up the fretboard towards the body. While all the other strings were fine - so unless they all have this problem it can't just be string gauge as it had the standard factory strings. Not too impressed that it passed through QC and through the shop in the way it played - it was very quickly apparent it was wrong after three chords. Fret ends were also rather sharper than the price level suggested I felt. I had the feeling that the particular model I got was possibly more cheap than fun, but I suspect from what I've seen though that there will be much better ones out of the factory than the one I got. I felt that my much cheaper £50 Yamaha Guitalele was better finished! I am sure that even the best ones would be no match for a Tacoma Papoose though. I'm not sure whether to persevere with the idea at present? I do have our Vintage Paul Brett Viator in terz tuning that I can use which is part way to being this sort of instrument. These small guitars can be fun though - which is what is tempting about them! Mark

Good news re refund etc!
At that price QC at factory and in shop will be non-existant, and sharp fret ends can be expected too!
Why not tune your Viator up to A-A with a set of lighter strings and see if you do really like the concept?

Less easy in a way that you wouldn't be aware of, but a good suggestion Keith! I share the Viator with my better half and it suits her best in Terz as it's a perfect fit for the range of her singing voice. She most often uses a Uke, but if she uses her GS Mini it's most often with a capo at fret 3. Of course I could just pop a capo on at fret 2 on the Terz'd Viator for the A-A experience! I have found the Viator in Terz a very good accompanying guitar for the celtic style mandolin family type of pieces - it's tone is a great fit for those. Ahhh - that's those type of arrangements that I keep meaning to do with my mandolin collection and keep forgetting about with my tying to play guitar, and do songwriting courses and learn to write tunes. Just not enough hours in the day, or days in the week. Or too few days called Saturday and Sunday anyway. Mark

I played gigs with stuff this bad when I was young. Sing louder than what you are playing and nobody notices. That's pretty poor though.
