In my limited experience the relatively inexpensive Rode NT1A works well for both vocals and guitar as a one source option for recording. I used to use one for instrument recordings too before buying a pair of NT5's...for me these add extra clarity to instrument recordings but are not as forgiving. The NT1A is particularly flattering for vocals...manages to add warmth and presence ...but records instrument accompaniment well too.

Some people are sniffy about reflection filters but mine makes a big difference. Make sure the recording room is not too reasonant - the filter won't fix that!

The Rode NT1A is a great condenser mic - I use two to record my guitars and back in my vocal recording days I used it for that too. Really affordable as well. www.rode.com/microphones/nt1-a

I've had a Rode NT1a for coming up 8 years now and I've used it on everything from miking up a tea cup (yes, really!) to acoustic guitar, vocals, clarinet and as a single distant mic on a drum kit. I don't know if it's as good as I think it is but I know that I can get a good sound from it and I've learnt the EQ tricks that work for it and my voice so I figure why change? The only thing I will say is that the preamps make a MASSIVE difference - I can't believe how much better my recordings sound now I'm using a UA Apollo compared to ym old M-Audio interface...

I thought about preamps. I have an Emu 1616m which is meant to have class A preamps. Whatever that means.
