I am currently fiddling with a 70's Fylde Goodfellow. It needs a few things doing... a neck reset, a new 0 fret and a few bits here and there. I'm not up to the really skilled repair jobs, but I can sort the electrics and other easy things.
It's been fitted with a 'Fishman Acoustic Matrix Natural' system somewhere along the way. It sounds pretty good... but I'd like to change the pots for something with shorter posts, to fit more discrete looking knobs (I could drop the posts down inside... but I'm thinking less stuff in there = better for acoustic sound). I don't know where to start to find suitable pots to go with this Fishman system. Do acoustic pickups usually have 250K? 500K? I have not a clue.
Also, is it an expensive / difficult job to have an adjustable truss rod installed?
Last question for now, promise... ;-)
How might a person go about raising the nut / 0 fret on a Fylde (preferably in a temporary way), to play lap steel? It sounds stupendously good with a bar, and I don't think I can resist it.
All best, Tom

Thanks ocarolan. That's the kind of thing I was thinking of. Do you reckon it would sit in the right place over the 0 fret? I must drop Roger a line, thanks for the link.

- the "right place" isn't crucial once you aren't actually fretting the notes - the frets become just a guide, and a tiny bit out either way doesn't matter as you'll soon accommodate to it anyway!

I started playing lap style using a nut riser like that on an Eastman acoustic. That's how Kelly Jioe Phelps plays lap style, check out you tube.
Later I progressed to a weissenborn. Lap style slide is very addictive. Just tune to open D and off you go.

Don't know if this might be any help. A few years ago I converted a 1970s Japanese Epiphone which has a zero fret. I wanted a non-destructive job so eventually came up with the idea of using a nut blank. I shaped this to sit in front of the original nut and radiused the base to fit the zero fret. Tried as hard as I could to get the crown of the nut in the right place so that the intonation remained right. Checking with a tuner suggested all ok. I am no luthier just your average someone who can use tools for diy etc. I have a picture on file (not brilliant but shows enough) and to be honest am not sure how to get it uploaded here. If you'd like to see it contact me and I'll get it to you somehow.

Thanks leitrimnick . Yes, I'd definitely be interested to see that pic, if you're able to get it to me.

Very like mine, except that I took it right over the zero fret. I've managed to improve the pic and get it uploaded, somehow computers never quite do what I want with pictures...must be old age. If it's too small and you can't increase it maybe I can email or Dropbox a better one. Hope it helps.

Sorry, I may be thick, but I can't see the need for taking a lot of trouble to get the raised string break point exactly over the zero fret when you're going to play slide. Near enough is plenty good enough - the frets become guides only, your ears do the rest, and there's plenty of parallax error with the strings raised high above the frets to have to compensate for visually anyway - a couple of mm or so either way on the break point should make little practical difference.
My rough and ready nut raiser as above works just fine. Mind you, that is a very neat job you did there Nick!

I think my reasoning was that if, effectively, I did away with the zero fret then I'd kind of changed everything...but then I polish guitars as well! Nick I changed the tuners as well!!!
