In 2010 I sent a guitar around the UK on a Road Trip in conjunction with members of the Acoustic Life Forum – which pre-dated the Acoustic Soundboard Forum. I’d seen this done in America and thought it a good idea and to my knowledge this was the first time it has been tried in the UK. I followed this up with a 2011 Road Trip of two guitars of the same model but different woods and then with a Mandolin Road Trip for Acoustic Soundboard members in 2013. These Road Trips went very well. Everyone who took part took good care of the instruments and they were very responsible and professional in writing their reviews. I made a lot of friends – as did others who took part and ended up meeting in reality as well as virtually on the Forum – and experienced a huge variety of lovely music made on the instruments which is what it is all about for me. It was a great way of testing the instruments robustness and a lot of the feedback helped in fine tuning my instrument building process.
Here's how it works - the guitar maker makes an instrument and asks for players interested to take part. A "player chain" is formed based on geography and the instrument shipped to the first player in the chain who has it for a set period of time. The participant creates a thread on the Forum providing feedback on how they get on with the instrument together with recordings/videos of the music they make on it. At the end of their period they arrange to meet up with the next participant in the chain to pass on the guitar or ship it on to them. If the chain is long enough then a "pit stop" with the builder is scheduled to setup the guitar again for any effects of its travels and send it on again.
Following events with the Young Acoustic Guitar Musicians Competition 2015/16 I have a guitar – “Samhradh” - ready and waiting to go on a Road Trip. “Samhradh”, the Gaelic for summer pronounced Sow-roo or Sow-rah, is a short scale (630mm) 13 frets clear of the body Grand Concert sized guitar with a Florentine cutaway. It has a Lutz spruce top, American Black Walnut back, sides and neck and is fitted with a clear mylar pickguard and a K&K Pure Mini Western pickup. The guitar comes with a Hiscox Pro II hardcase. A photo documentary of the making of "Samhradh" is here on the Forum."
Participants have to be active members here at Acoustic Soundboard and I will need details of address, phone and e-mail. You can register an interest by responding to this thread and I'll then pm you to arrange to get details. If participants chose to ship “Samhradh” to the next in the chain they must use a trackable service and pack the guitar follwing instructions I will provide.
