Spent a couple of happy hours earlier today in Wunjos. Any of you down that way might be interested in some of their stuff.
As usual there was smattering of vintage Martins, Gibsons and Guilds. There were a couple of J50s and a J45 from the late 50s and early 60s — none of them any good to my ears (one was as dead as a dod).
Then things got a bit better.
There are two superb Brook guitars there for under £2K. There's a lovely Tavy which, sadly, has too narrow and thin a neck for me. Better was a simple wonderful short scale Taw, Walnut — and cedar I guess — which is just the most fabulous ragtime and country blues guitar. These knocked more expensive competition clear our of the water.
Next up was a brand new McIlroy finger style guitar (small jumbo), spruce and rosewood. This was still very tight but I reckon will soon open up into a really excellent finger style guitar. Great in DADGAD.
Then there were a host of Lowdens. There's a really, really, good O50 which is new although it was a demo guitar. It is selling for a grand off although is still expensive at £4.5K. For those of you who like this sound it might be worth checking out. It really sang in DADGAD.
They also gave me a Wee Lowden to play — first time I've played with these. I was a bit bemused by it. It really didn't do anything for me and goodness gracious the price ....
... On the other hand they have an Atkin Troubadour — built to virtually the same dimensions. The Atkin seems to have a mahogany body and has a nice chunky neck which seems to work well with the short scale. It sounds a million dollars — the classic, small bodied mahogany Gibson sound. For someone with small hands this might just be the only guitar you ever need. And at just under £2K it was a fraction of the Wee Lowden.
But, the best was yet to come. FX: Whispering in quiet and hallowed tones.
There is a 1970s (I think) Martin 00 — short scale mahogany guitar. Just out of this world. The best ragtime or country blues guitar you could find and, of course, incredibly comfortable to play. Just about £2K. Pure wonderment.
