Hi Guys
Having a little issue that is really starting to rattle my cage. Having set up my recording device I have played with a few recordings. Problem is that as I do not like using a pick and strum mainly with my index finger, I am getting this annoying high string ping when I strum up, and it really shows up on the recordings. It is also noticeable on the down strum but not as severe. For instance when playing Wonderwall it really does become annoying. Have tried missing the string but that changes the chord sound. Any ideas? have checked tuning is right so is it my ears or a bad habit?
Cheers in advance

Any chance it could be a bit of buzz or rattle on the string? If it happens more on certain frets then it could be a bit of buzz against the fret.

I can hear it on the recording. It could be a recording issue, in which case I'll leave it to those more knowledgeable about such things.
The only other thing I can think of is that you might be catching the string with your nail or fingertip, so that the string is being plucked rather than just strummed evenly with the others - that might explain why you hear it more on the upstroke. It might also be that you're pulling up slightly on the string so that it's bouncing off the frets (seems less likely, but not impossible if you have the action set fairly low).

Good point! will check my strumming to see if I am catching it as you describe, makes sense as it is the first string on the up stroke. thanks

Just a thought. Have you tried strumming down with your index finger and up with your thumb? I know it sounds awkward, but so much about guitar playing is training your fingers to do stuff they don't want to do. The advantage is that then you have the convex part of your nail hitting the strings on the down stroke and on the upstroke, so there's nothing to get caught and create the ping.
But, to be honest, for any kind of popular music strumming, a plectrum is the ideal beast. It's surprising how many subtle changes it can bring with a change in angle or strength of attack (and that's without considering the plectrum type - which adds a whole load of other variations). It also permits a dynamic range you're unlikely to be able to duplicate with fingers alone.
I'm afraid I can't hear your soundcloud recording. The link takes me back to the top of this page.

I can't hear your recordingi either... So here's me making a suggestion based totally on nothing at all - when I strum with my fingers, I don't use my i finger much - its more of all the fingers (or mainly m and a) down and back up (kind of like a rasgueado effect, but you need to ask Alison about that) very loose.... OR down on your m finger and up on your thumb - (you kind of hold them together and flick your wrist - personally I prefer the first method). your i finger is quite capable of making nasty tinny sound if you drag the nail up over the first string and your recording apparatus may be preferentially picking up the high frequencies. Just a thought.

Sorted your link for you lefthook. Next time you need to ignore the share and embed buttons on your Soundcloud page, just copy the Soundcloud page link from the top of your browser, and when composing your post click the Soundcloud icon (orange, on the right) and paste the link into the small screen that appears. The result will be as above when you make your post. If that doesn't make sense give me a shout. Keith
