The Rare Earth into the Headway should be fine. That mini belts out some real signal!

The Rare Earth into the Headway should be fine. That mini belts out some real signal! Thanks Andy. To my untrained and quite possibly undiscerning ear the Headway works better for my particular set-up than the Orchid. Someone here mentioned the room as one of the variables and I've just found that to be particularly true. I've been playing in our tiny spare room, with the Acus One-8 just 4 or 5 feet away so I tried it in the dining room with a much greater separation, more like 15 feet, and it sounds infinitely better!

This is a topic I've been geeking out on for years now and I'm still not close to getting tone that is 'like my guitar but louder'. I guess I'm looking for something that doesn't exist!
I've just had Adrian Lucas install a K&K Pure Mini in the guitar he's sending me up next week. I've never tried one before, so I figured it's time.
My Heiner Dreizehnter Model A has a Pick-up the World Trio, which is two soundboard transducers wire to the tip and a UST to the ring. This is my second such installation after the first one got crackly. I'm now experimenting with a D-Tar Solstice stereo blender with that particular installation and managed last night to get some decent tone for fingerstyle.
My Santa Cruz has the D-Tar Wavelength that Nigel mentioned, installed by Rick Turner himself. That coupled with the Mama Bear modeller got me some good tone, but I sold the Mama Bear to fund the Solstice.
My Kim Walker has the Baggs Lyric and I've coupled that with the Baggs Venue DI. It's a very good combo and I can only imagine that the Anthem would be even better for bigger venues, giving me the versatility that I get with the Pick-up the World Trio. Now that the Mama Bear's gone, I can use the Venue DI in its place, and it works pretty well with the Wavelength UST too.
If the Solstice doesn't cut the mustard, it's my intention to sell it and the Venue DI and replace them both with the Grace Felix. It's expensive, but I feel like it would work with all my existing pickups. After experimenting for years with different pickups and preamps, I'm starting to get closer by learning how to tweak things and understanding that the preamp is more important that the pickup.
I did used to get very frustrated with how hard this was. Now I just get frustrated. That's progress!
Oh, when Kim Walker was installing my Lyric, he did mention that he didn't like pickups as he felt that they had a negative effect on the acoustic tone of the instrument, but he recognised that they are, as I think it was Andy said, a necessary evil for performing musicians. He could tell the difference even with the tiny footprint of the glue pads of the Lyric before and after installation.

Even a small guitar amp really needs some space to open up into! Still, you have to rehearse where you can!
