My flying visit over the weekend to the wonderful city of York was only briefly punctuated with music, sad to say. Lunch in the Three Tuns was amazing - fish 'n' chips, Marstons New World IPA (superb), quiz machine and the best selection of classic rock ever on the music system (may have been juke box). Could have stayed there all day. Usual selection of excellent buskers, but the best for me was a young chap with dreadlocks (sort of Newton Faulkner vibe) playing a Stonebridge guitar and singing in the middle of Kings Square. I liked it so much, I stopped to listen for 10 minutes and even threw a few coins into the case! Went to Red Cow Music too, but shouldn't have bothered. The selection of instruments available is all acoustic, but nothing special. Plenty of Tanglewood, Sigma etc, and even a few Martins, but the plethora of 'PLEASE DON'T TOUCH' signs kind of put me off. I saw a Martin Dreadnought Jnr, and it was smaller than I expected. I thought I wouldn't really notice a huge difference between that and a regular dread, but there really is. It does look like a smaller or travel dread, and I decided against trying it out. Overall, the lack of music was balanced by the sheer variety of good pubs and beer on offer anyway

A fair description of York. I fear you picked the least inspiring guitar shop there but sometimes fuelling the inner man is more important.

Martin you should try a visit to the Red Rose city of Lancaster. There is a very active live music scene most noteably at the Golden Lion, Stonewell Tavern, Ye Olde John o'Gaunt and The Robert Gillow. The Robert Gillow has all sorts of live music including a large percentage of acoustic stuff. Tomorrow 14/04/16 at lunchtime they have "The Young 'uns" performing a one hour spot. Not bad for the price of a pint? The rather good Promenade Music is within three miles at Morecambe (on the Prom!). Last time I was in they had a playable second hand guitar at £35. Their prices range from that to 'How much have you got?'

Steady Martin, beware the siren call of the red rose. Think of the inoculations you will need and the problems of re-entering Halifax with a Lancashire stamp on your passport.

'Ere ... what's all this about Tanglewood being nothing special!!! You're right Martin - "PLEASE DON'T TOUCH" signs don't give off a friendly vibe. Maybe all the good pubs and beer nearby make some customers a little careless? I know I used to get careless as a newt on good beer. Mark

'Ere ... what's all this about Tanglewood being nothing special!!! Oops! Probably didn't phrase that quite right Nothing really stood out, although they had quite a few decent guitars. That's probably more accurate
