Interesting repeat coming up tomorrow, Radio 2 22.00 - www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0785bg8Here's what the link says - "Another chance to hear Bob Harris celebrate the life and music of Sandy Denny, a singer and songwriter who was at the very heart of the birth of British folk rock. It was first broadcast in April 2008 and marked the 30th anniversary of her death. The programme explores her early years, the two periods spent as a member of Fairport Convention, her solo work, the circumstances surrounding her death and the legacy of both her songs and recorded material. The documentary contains exclusive interviews with Robert Plant, who talks about Sandy's duet on Led Zeppelin's The Battle Of Evermore, Dave Cousins of The Strawbs, Richard Thompson, Steeleye Span's Maddy Prior, Fairport Convention members Dave Pegg and Simon Nicol, her recording engineer Jon Wood, Joe Boyd and Linde Nijland, a Dutch folk singer who recorded an album of Sandy's songs. It also includes a BBC archive interview of Sandy herself, along with a wide selection of music from her Fairport Convention, Fotheringay and solo albums."

I was just listening to an old BBC interview with Sandy that I have on CD. It was wistfully melancholic and unwittingly prophetic of her tragic early death. But it also mentioned how a female American drug addict had drawn the strength from Sandy's music to rebuild her life.
It struck me how much we take for granted the ability through technology to hear people speak across the gulf of time, their words frozen for us to draw upon whenever we choose.

The CD of hers 'The Best of the BBC Recordings' is probably my favourite Sandy certainly the one I listen to most, mainly just Sandy on guitar or piano and that superlative voice (oh and it contains my favourite version of Blackwaterside!), in fact it's playing as I type. The BBC did some pretty good stuff back in the day, by far my favourite performer and as my signature line says a day without some Sandy Denny is unthinkable.

Hi,
Thanks for the heads up Andy, I'll have a listen.
Just got back from a few days walking in the Lakes to find my copy of the new cd 'I've always kept a Unicorn, The Acoustic Sandy Denny' has arrived from my pre-order. Can't wait to play it tomorrow. Looks like at least 20 of the tracks are demo recordings of her solo guitar and vocals with about 8 recorded for the BBC. 40 numbers, sounds like heaven ..........

Just caught the highlights of the BBC Folk Awards 2016 last Wednesday; it is on BBC red button (601) on a loop, don't know how long for.
It was a superb show with Sandy getting the final award. Her daughter was there, haven't seen her before. Lovely tribute to her from old friends. And the finale song WKWTTG was sung by Rufus Wainwright (who I have not had much time for before) but gave a touching rendition. Worth watching.

I had a speaking gig that night, and as Radio 4 was just hammering on about the referendum, and Radio 2 was running late, I managed to enjoy it uninterrupted on my drive home. Well written, well narrated, and made me think back to those lovely days ...who knows where the time goes eh?
