Seeing as people are being more specific, this is the list of stuff I like that I put on the band website:
1920-40s Acoustic Blues (Blind Blake, Blind Boy Fuller, Robert Johnson, Memphis Minnie, Leroy Carr, Skip James, Mississippi John Hurt, etc), The Velvet Underground, 70s Prog Rock (Gabriel-era Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd), Led Zeppelin, The Incredible String Band, David Bowie, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Bob Marley, Talking Heads, Television, Kate Bush, Orange Juice, The Smiths, Cocteau Twins, The Bunnymen, The Go-Betweens, R.E.M., The Blue Nile, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, Pavement/Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Blur, Teenage Fanclub, Radiohead, Beck, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Super Furry Animals, The Beta Band, Sufjan Stevens, Grandaddy, Iron & Wine, Sparklehorse, Sigur Ros, Neutral Milk Hotel.. and loads more!

Like many here, I grew up through the 60s. Before the Beatles it was Cliff and, perhaps more importantly, The Shadows. Thought Hank Marvin was a god who never needed to look at his left hand. Then the Beatles came although I never was a huge fan. I was about 13 when I heard the Byrds and that Rickie12 sound...that stopped me in my tracks. A bit later came John Peel which led not only to Martin Carthy, The Fairports etc but also John Fahey, Davy Graham et al. Mike Raven's blues/soul show gave me Robert Johnson and his predecessors and contemporaries. A friend at school introduced me to BB King. Along the the way somewhere I had picked up bits of jazz from Stan Getz through Lady Day and Blossom Dearie to little bits of Beebop etc. Generally I prefer my jazz cool, eg Chet Baker. In parallel with this came early music, probably via the folk scene, which has left me with an enduring love of polyphony eg Tallis The only thing I really can't stand is any form of Bel Canto singing, opera, tenors etc. although most of the electronica, hiphop stuff and so called R&B leaves me cold. Even then, there's an occasional interesting track. Listen to more or less anything....but I do love fingerstyle guitar, followed very closely by the aforementioned polyphony. Simply cannot understand people who listen to one kind of music and I don't much care for music being kept in glass cases my the various branches of the Music Police.

I can only be definite about what I don't like; 'R n B', hiphop, opera, singers who croak at the beginning of a word or sing down their noses, Beethoven, Mozart and, most of all, jazz.
I like ancient sacred music (eg Tallis, Byrd and all that), slightly less ancient sacred music and secular music, Victorian hymns, everything Baroque, quite a lot of pop music, electronic Ibiza-type dance music, quite a lot of foreign world music, blues, flamenco, Latin.
I haven't mentioned folk because that's still as yet explored territory. One of my May resolutions is to get to know some of the folk musicians that appear in the Acoustic Cafe, starting today . . .

This tallies exactly with my pet hates. I should only add rap and anything associated with Simon Mephistopheles Cowell. Brian

Favourite Albums?
For me the 'album' qualification must be one where you want to relisten to EVERY track and not just 75% of them, which makes it difficult.
Here's my 1,2,3 ...
1. Greatest Hits Gordon Lightfoot 2. More greatest hits Gordon Lightfoot 3. Even more Greatest Hits Gordon Lightfoot.
Get the message yet?
So seriously, after GL I would have, in no particular order, many of S&G's albums particularly The Essential Paul Simon, Discs 1 and 2 (not Graceland); Brothers in Arms, Dire Straits; James Taylor, Greatest Hits; anything Sandy Denny; more of anything Sandy Denny; Steeleye Span (best of); Songbird, Eva Cassidy; Artisan, Breathing Space; Dylanesque, Brian Ferry; Sogno, Andrea Bocelli (makes me weep!). Tom Paxton, non-protest stuff.
The trouble is I then think of loads of others that I should include, but where I like many of their individual songs but not their albums; included here would be Richard Thompson (great and not so great); Ralph McTell (I know this is bad to say but some I find a bit thin, but love others), Joni Mitchell, much of Eagles and Fairport. etc etc.
As others have said the genre would exclude anything Jazz, Rap, Hip hop, 99% opera ...

Music has to speak to you and that's why I don't like hip hop for the most part as I can't relate to it. It doesn't mean I think it's pants though. I hear the odd bit and think that's tuneful or clever. It is just the odd bit mind. I suppose 99% is pants to me then. The kid at the bottom of our street who has his pants constantly on show loves it despite being white middle class and living in a 7 bedroom house. He obviously relates to living in the ghetto. Brap!!!! Brap!!!!

Brap!!!! Brap!!!! I agree. It doesn't pay to dismiss any genre outright. Rap isn't designed for me and I won't go looking for it, but I do hear the odd track on soundtracks that I really like. Peeling back the layers reveals that genres are far more broad and various than we ever thought. Country, for instance, reaches from Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers to Taylor Swift, taking in Cajun, bluegrass and the Nashville sound in between. I know someone who claims to despise country but has a large collection of bluegrass and albums by Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton in their collection. The scope of jazz is phenomenal considering it ran its course in less than a century. It takes in everything from New Orleans moans to Sun Ra, with Ellington, Bird, Gershwin, Fats Waller and countless others adding their own unique voices along the way.

De La Soul, Dream Warriors, Arrested Development, etc. Can't be doing with the gangsta and hoes stuff ?

Even the Duke? (Sobs quietly inside.) Yes, even him, I'm afraid. It sets my teeth on edge. The only Jazz I've got into is Django Reinhart. I'm not ruling out a jazz phase in the future tho, but I fear I may be too thick for jazz ?
