Do you ever try something that's way beyond your abilities or comprehension? I do, and it doesn't usually end well. Oh dear, it's happening again. I've got the urge to try Pachelbel's Canon as a long-term project, even if takes two years.
There's hundreds of arrangements on Youtube, but only one seems close enough to the real thing. I've already ordered it, but now the doubts have started creeping in. What if even this arrangement isn't right? I decided that to be 'right', it must retain its identity as a canon. It's no good just doing something around the chord progression. Secondly, I do like the continuous bass line, and I'm not sure this is always present in the arrangement. It might be moved to a higher octave in places, or it might be omitted.
I don't know any music theory, but someone once told me that the Canon has the same bass line as Streets of London. The question was, does that mean it has the same chords? I looked up the chords, which are:-
D A B minor F sharp minor G D G A (x 22!) If I were playing Streets of London it would go:-
C G A minor ?E something F C F G
It seems to fit. It will be interesting to see if it is in the Streets of London key to make use of familiar chords, or with 6th tuned to D to keep in in D.
Next I downloaded the score and read it whilst playing a Youtube string quartet, singing the bass line so as not to get lost.
And that's as far as I've got. It's hard work when you don't know any theory and struggle even to play short and simple pieces.
If anyone has waded through this ramble, do you think I'm on the right lines when deciding whether an arrangement is good enough?
When it arrives I'll try to identify the voices and see how much of it is a compromise. I suppose there has to be some compromise with a guitar arrangement.
