A new series of this guitar competition begins on Sky Arts this coming Tuesday (14 June) evening, repeated very early Wednesday morning. I very much enjoyed the first series last year. This time around, the judges are Tony Visconti, George Benson and Miloš Karadaglić For further details see HERE.Brian

I enjoyed the first episode. There are some good players, although I do think there are a few who go for flashy technique over musical sensitivity. I also think the auditions put the rock guitarists at a disadvantage, because the stuff they're playing really belongs in a band - played solo, it sounds like a music shop demo, whereas players in other genres are playing pieces meant for solo performance.

I'm really enjoying tonight's episode - mostly because it's more of a documentary about George Benson, with a live performance from Ronnie Scott's. He was talking in the first episode about how he learned to play with a very light touch on his fretting hand, because he learned on a cheap guitar with strings that were falling apart, and he's kept that technique ever since. I'm finding it really interesting to watch him play - you can see the lightness of his fretting hand, and how it allows him to move chord shapes around the fretboard easily. I don't know if the contestants are learning anything, but I am
