Ok ... first up is a mandolin. Seems playable. Tuners need a bit of love! The label says: fabryka Instrumentow Lutniczych, Lubin legnicki rok 1960II. I'll get that translated by my son-in-law (from whence they came, well, from his mum, really) looks to be a fairly generic eastern-bloc semi-bowlback mandolin. Decent action. I'm just going to assume that the fretboard inlay bits are plastic

And a guitar. No label in the guitar - but this label on the back of the headstock gives some idea of its provenance! The action has not been helped by having steel strings on what is, I suggest, a nylon string guitar given the width of the fingerboard. Indeed 'action' is probably the wrong word entirely! A bolt on neck might help to ease that - if I had any idea what a) that meant; and, b) I knew what to do with it! A 'floating fingerboard' (not so much floating as soaring away! Still, definitely a guitar Csaba (my son-in-law) tells me the guitar has been around for a fair few years (his mum reckons 50+). A restoration job, I reckon - though I also reckon it's probably pine. Still, a bit of history... and it means something to him so it deserves a bit of TLC. Won't be from me, though. I'll polish it - that's the extent of my skills. Might just be left as an ornament.

Aye. Intrigued as to why the guitar has 'made in USSR' in English rather than Cyrillic. Must get some nylon strings...

I'd say that the guitar in its current state might serve well as lap slide. Sure has the street cred.

Yup, I'm with Dobro on this. Get a riser to fit over the nut and get sliding! I did this with an old spanish built classical style guitar. It had however always had a tailpiece and steel strings from new.

Leo, With regards to your "From Russia with Love" guitar (via Hungary - maybe it was part of the 1956 excursion ) you might find this blog interesting. The neck joint looks to be the same one with the external bolt and elevated fretboard.
