Acoustic Guitar String Shootout - Coated vs Phosphor Bronze vs 80/20 - D'Addario : On JustinGuitar's YouTube channel. I was quite pleased to get the identities of strings A, B and C correct, though my preference of Phosphor Bronze was not in agreement with the majority of comments on the video or with Justins own view. Not too much difference between the Phosphor Bronze and the Coated - but I thought the video did give a pretty good indication of the sort of differences I've experienced in the past. Mark

Listening just on the laptop I couldn't really tell any difference between any of them. The most striking thing about it was the difference between the way Justin pronounces D'Addario and the way I've been pronouncing it all these years. I daren't say it now, in case I'm getting it wrong!

Newtone Heritage. Pleasing on the ear....and kinder to the fingers.

No, you are both wrong. All guitar strings are pronounced: "gnu t'own hairy t'age".

Shouldn't a "string shootout" involve using them to fire arrows

Shouldn't a "string shootout" involve using them to fire arrows ...only if the neck is bowed... K

I was going to fetch my arrows and quiver, but then I thought I'd quiver first. Mark

Only just read this thread. I listened using decent headphones but through my Macbook so probably not the best way to distinguish the different tones.
I came to different conclusions after each round and in one of them couldn't tell the difference at all. I think I guessed overall which were the PBs but got the others the wrong way around.
Like many here, I use Newtone Masterclass or Heritage anyway. They feel good and sound good to my ears. The only way to choose the right strings is to try many different sets yourself and come to your own conclusions. The sound will change according to the guitar used, your personal style and attack, the acoustic of the room etc. Also, the feel of the string is as important as the sound. Coated strings feel sticky to me so I wouldn't really touch them.
And 'Dee-Addario' - dear dear. I love Justin, but really.
