I would suggest the hardcase. Offers better protection when transporting. (Just my opinion).

It depends a bit on your budget and, to some extent, the value of the guitar. A hard case gives more protection and more peace of mind, but is obviously more expensive too. A good-quality hard case (e.g Hiscox) might set you back £80+ whereas you can pick up a decent gig bag for 15-20. There are cheaper hard cases, but quality is an issue with some of them - I've had a couple that weren't much more solid than a good gig bag.

I have a variety of cases including 9 Caltons, a Hoffee, several Ameritage and Hiscox, TKL etc. I also have a leather gig bag made in South America by Probag which cost me $ 200 nearly a decade ago. I've used it a lot with expensive guitars including when flying. It's very easy to carry on my back and very well padded.

There is a compromise - a hard foam case. They are super lightweight, have straps to carry it on your back and offer much more protection than a gig bag. They are all I use now, something like this one: Hard Foam Case

Gator cases are soft but very well padded and as strong as any solid wooden case. They are rather expensive but well worth the money.
