Since coming back to guitar properly I'm wondering what category I'm at, I've got/ getting a great rhythm going well, I can fairly play chords well the basic ones at least, my chord changes are getting good,
However I'm struggling to get to grips with tablature, I'm not sure when I should be using a capo, or much about capo work, and I would love to try my hand at the blues,
So does this mean im a beginner or intermediate guitarist please?

That's a tough question christoph! There's so many different facets to guitar playing and a case to be made for some sort of definition in each as to whether someone is beginner or intermediate. Scales, Techniques, Chords, Music Reading, Theory, Songs, Improvisation, etc..... So you could be classed as beginner in some areas and intermediate in others. I quite liked this definition that I have seen :- " Personally, I would start to consider someone more intermediate when the barrier to their learning is their understanding of material, rather than getting their damned fingers to do what they're bloody well told" The road of guitar playing is also never ending - always something new to learn however good you get - and that makes it difficult to judge where along the line of progress the definitions of beginner, intermediate, advanced, expert or whatever might sit. To some extent every-time we try to learn something new on the guitar we are back to being a beginner. I have ended up in my more advanced years trying to avoid anything in the way of targets and destinations in my guitar playing journey, trying to concentrate on enjoying the journey. Not always successfully I'll admit! Mark

The whole 'what level am I?' debate is subjective - and you can only class yourself (or be classed) in comparison to others. If you can play everything you want to play how you want to play it then you're an expert. If you can't quite play everything you want to play how you want to play it but can identify where you need to improve; you're intermediate. If you can't play everything you want to play how you want to play it and haven't the first idea of how to set about that task; you're a beginner. Probably.

The whole 'what level am I?' debate is subjective - and you can only class yourself (or be classed) in comparison to others. This is exactly why you should never believe anyone who tells you they play guitar "a bit". It either means they know two chords but they can't change between them, or they've recently returned from a tour with Eric Clapton.

This is exactly why you should never believe anyone who tells you they play guitar "a bit". It either means they know two chords but they can't change between them, or they've recently returned from a tour with Eric Clapton. And comparison itself is just as hard. e.g. I reckon, on a scale of 1% (worst) to 100% (best) I rate
--1% against the guys on Guitar Star (and lucky to get the 1!) --20% against the majority at HB6 --40% against the 'average' at our local folk club --95% against my group of learners that I try to help
So just don't worry about it. The only time you will really need to know is if you buy a book 'for beginners' or 'intermediate' and you might find it too hard/too easy; but you should have a pretty good idea just by a flick through.
Enjoy it! (and at times hate it! ).
