I'd be inclined (factiously or maybe not) to suggest you repair the laptop first!
Something like the iRig system will cost you about £30 and will work on an Android Phone (although as always with Android check compatibility).
To do this with any success you will need to spend a little bit of money but maybe not that much!
The Zoom H2N is a portable recorder that sports very good stereo mics. This has some decent on board effects (reverb, etc) which can fill out the sound a little. This might give you all you need to create a file for upload to Soundcloud. This also comes with some free software that you can install on you PC for editing. About £120 with a memory card. Add a very cheap video tripod ad you have a very useable system.
So in terms of cost (just so that you get an idea):
iRig system for recording to Android — can be done for £30 (even cheaper options available). Add Android audio editing — there are free apps around.
A dedicated recorder such as the H2n
If the laptop worked you can get free or pretty cheap audio editing software — you will need a USB mic for input but these are also pretty cheap.
The laptop option (if the laptop works) would be no more expensive. An H2n PLUS the laptop would be pretty flexible.
Or, you can do what I did and have the bank manager or your partner very upset with you ....

I think you can record into Soundcoud - or at least one of its competitors - I shall investigate.

I suspect if you hit this button it'll let you record... (although that might record it to MY account - so please don't LOL 1. Open your soundcloud page 2. Click 'upload' 3. Click 'start new recording' 4. Hit the big red button Hope this helps/works.
