Having just ordered new strings I was gawping around the Fretsounds site and saw Timber Tones plectrums. Do any of you use them (or other wooden plectrums) and how do you find them ?

Yes, I bought a pack (12 different types, as I recall) when they first came out around 5 or 6 years ago. You can hear a difference between some of them, but I suspect that's due to the softness of the wood rather than any intrinsic tonal qualities attaching to mahogany or rosewood, for example. They do, however, have quite a nice slipperiness on the string but not in your hand. They have no give in them. So if you're used to a thick, hard pick they'll be OK, but if you're used to anything flexible, you'll need to change your picking technique. They really wear quickly, too. Especially when used on a mandolin. I guess you could trim them when they wear, but I confess, I just threw them out. I gave away the last 6 in Friday Forum Giveaway #109, and Martin won them. So what did you think, Martin?

I gave away the last 6 in Friday Forum Giveaway #109, and Martin won them. So what did you think, Martin? I think they are very pretty In fact, too nice to use, but I do love nicely made wooden objects, and they feel good to hold. I have another couple of wooden picks, made from the excess wood when my guitar was built, and they are just as nice, but thinner than the Timber Tones ones. sweyne1 - PM me your address and I can send you one and you can judge whether you like them or not

I have couple although I rarely flat pick. The sound is warmer and deeper I think.

I really like Timber tones' flextones ones- they are made of some sort of animal protein, and have a bit more give in them than the wooden ones. They give a lovely thick tone, but have found that the quality of them varies. The first 2 I bought were great, but the third one was too thin for my liking, and I lost a lot of tone. Well worth trying out though.
Other favourite are Dawg pics and Dinlop Primetones.
I have to add that I only use plectrums for my octave mandolins.

I did try some wooden Timber Tones plectrums when I was still playing electric.
The different wood density of the different wood types did alter the sound quite drastically. I did prefer them to a number of the more typical plectrums in my collection.
But I didn't and still don't use plectrums very much, even on electric, so I didn't get to notice the wearing out issue.
I'm not so convinced with them on an acoustic guitar, or on a mandolin, and have been sticking mainly with delrin when I do use a plectrum.

They are very pretty (what wood isn't) and they also feel good as you say. I've only played them for a while and the most obvious initial difference is the lack of flex compared with my usual ones. I'll report back in a few days once i've played them some more and pass on my thoughts. Very many thanks again Martin. John

I wonder how many you could get out of a railway sleeper... I thought you loved that sleeper wood. Well, that's how it came across in your posts.

I've got absolutely nothing against sleeper-wood, earthbalm. In fact, when I saw colins's arrangement prize guitar in Halifax, I could have sworn that Mora's other name was Palo Escrito. Very similar. I have nothing against socks, either. Feet do need regular washing, though.

You're welcome, John. Hope it helps you decide what they're like. I said i'd come back in a while after trying out the wood plectrums you sent Martin. I really am struggling with the lack of flexibility. And I also get a nicer, softer sound with my regular plectrums. I'll try some more but, at the moment I don't see me becoming a convert. Thanks very much again for your helpfulness in sending them. It was very much appreciated. John
