Hey, Already have a thread going on in builds (Astrand OM). Just wanted to pick your very knowledgeable brains as to what you think about Fretboard inlays.
getting to the stage where i will soon have to make a decision on whether to have some inlay work done or forget the idea.
Teds guitars are aesthetically super clean and i am usually not one for adornments or bling, but you just need to look on his Instagram page or inlay artist Magnus Ramel's page (Ted uses Magnus for his work) to see whats possible. The combination of Teds work, various ideas and Magnus R's very precise work is fabulous and a testament to them both in their individual crafts.
feel free to knock the idea in its entirety or sing its praises for all to hear, but would genuinely like to hear your thoughts
in anticipation

I'm all for keeping things as simple as possible, but there is no denying how in-keepingly beautiful those inlays by Mr Ramel are.
As a compromise, why not choose a simple, single symbol for the 12th fret? (The heart with the arrow through it is an example of the sort of thing). Thereby keeping the overall clean aesthetic, but with a little hint of personal (under)statement.

Like the idea of simple too. Thought that if too much inlay used it would distract from the burl that's going to be used in the guitar,however...have been very ill this last two years and only now feeling like my old self so as you say,and Ted says something personal to me might be an idea and worth considering. What that might be however I have no idea!!!!

As simple as possible or not at all is my approach. Anything too fancy would embarass me.

Perhaps maybe something as simple as an initial in a really cool font?
If I were having to choose for instance, it'd be the letter A, my Wife's initial. Nobody else would know what it meant, but I would.

I think it's a very personal choice. I'm not an inlay fan, so I would usually opt for none at all, but there's nothing at all wrong with it.

It would be simple mop dots for me. Merry Christmas all.

"Tasteful" seems to be the watchword here. Anything too brash would be, well, brash. Mind you, we might just be proving that (predominantly) British acoustic finger-pickers - i.e. ASBo members - have a tendency towards the "tasteful" and the minimal. Other types of people do exist and they might like something loud and showy... but it would be difficult to carry off something like jonnymosco's arrangement of The First Noel, for example, with abalone bare ladies all over your fingerboard. Possible but difficult.

Another vote for simple here! I'm all for plain guitars, especially fingerboards (side dots only). I did specify a discreet 12 fret inlay on one instrument though Inlay work can be hugely expensive, and I admire the skills involved, but the above pictured inlay is as far as I am happy to go aesthetically. But, it's going to be your guitar Scott, and you need to be happy with it, so I do hope that you'll come to a decision you'll be happy to live with, even if that turns out to be an extensive tree of life kind of thingy! I usually prefer some kind of marker , even just small dots or the like , but Ive recently taken in a bass with an ebony board and no markers expcept side dots and I really like it . So not really much help Im afraid but it would depend on the overall look I suppose. I do like the falling leaves that Patrick Eggle and Lowden sometimes use .

At a practical level, if you're good enough to post videos on line, then some kind of indication of where you are on the fretboard can be extremely helpful for the guitar student who is trying to learn the piece. Along with a number of other makers, I like to put discrete markers on the top corner/edge of the fretboard where they can be seen by both player and viewer. Here's a nice example from colins.

Another shining example is RosieTGC's superb guitar in her build thread on the Forum - see HERE. . This is an absolutely stunning demonstration of elegant design and practicability! Brian

Whilst admiring the skilled artwork in producing fancy inlays I prefer plain. just dots on the edge would be my choice. i really don't like big blocks of MOP or elaborate Tree of Life inlays. It is however all personal preferences. What suits you is Right.
