I hope this hasn't already been done here on the forum - I did a search but didn't see anything. I'm intrigued to know what you real acoustic guitarists like to feel under your left thumb by way of neck profile. It would also be interesting to know if there's any profile you have a problem with. I'll start the ball rolling with my favourite C profile. I have a feeling it suits my "almost" classical guitar position of the thumb. This isn't quite the required right at the back of the neck for classical which would probably suit D shape, but in slightly lazy fashion my thumb creeps slightly round towards the top of the neck. But only slightly - so C is good. U might be good for the same reason, but I think the neck is likely to be too chunky for me, especially if it's a wide neck. I just cannot get on with V neck profiles - particularly Medium or Hard V. I just find it incredibly uncomfortable and it feels like I'm having to use much more force to hold down chord shapes. It's rather limited my use of the little Vintage Viator, which I like a lot in all other respects. How do any of you that like the V neck profile cope with the extra pressure on the relatively small area of the thumb? Mark

I would give an answer, but I'm not a real acoustic guitarist As a bluffer with smallish hands though, I prefer a slim C.

I don't know what I prefer but the neck on my Brook Tamar is spot on for me.

I don't know if it's a hard or soft V on my Oberon but I suspect the former as Mr. B sort of raised an eyebrow when I took it in for a re-fret years ago. 'Don't touch it' I cried. That neck has suited my hand perfectly since I first took delivery decades ago. In the unlikely event of having enough dosh to buy a second Oberon it would have to have the same profile.

Soft V or full C or D for me, definitely not low profile.

The neck on my Brook OM is pretty much perfect for me - it's probably a C, but a very shallow one.

Sorry, I have no idea how to describe my favourite neck profile, nor how to relate it to the often used descriptions.
I have a variety of different feeling profiles on my guitars, and I seem to be able to get on with most things as long as not too shallow and not excessively V-ish. I do like something palm-filling though.
Much depends, for me, on the contour where the neck and fingerboard meet, as I'm an inveterate thumbover player, even on classical necks.

No hard & fast rules for me I'm afraid - I like the C on my Yamaha & the hard V on my Gibson. I'm never sure why the V get's such bad press as the original V necks are usually a lot more comfortable to get your hands round than the tree trunks they put on reissues of the same guitars.
I had an Antoria with a "U" neck (like a D but bigger) I wasn't keen on & I recently played a Guild in a guitar shop that had a shallow C combined with a wide nut that felt really wrong to me, but generally it comes down to the neck on any given guitar rather than any particular shape.

I *think* I like a V, but I'm not too picky when picking.

I have bugger all idea what neck profiles I have on my instruments. They're probably all different. The only thing I know is that none of them are square...
Maybe if it were pointed out to me and I had the chance to test them against each other I'd notice a difference but, until then...
