It's a technique that I generally associate with country music. Maybe played on a nice twangy Telecaster although it appears to becoming more mainstream (Albert Lee). Certainly on electric but maybe also on acoustic. Anyone on here use this playing style? And in what genre context. It could be the next playing style that Stanley 'tries but never masters' before he finds another guitar playing style on the Internet or the Tube. Guitar playing.....easy to be enchanted by it.....difficult to master/ play well.

I use it a fair bit. Acoustic guitar mostly (but in a band context mandolin/octave mandolin too), on some songs that I think benefit from both fingerstyle and strummage in the same song. Can't do anything too complicated fingerstyle this way, tends to be simple accompanying stuff in the verses and strummage in the chorus.
Prefer to do the complete fingerstyle thing really, ie thumbpick and three fingers, but as I hate strumming with a thumbpick the hybrid picking, ie flatpick plus two fingers, is v handy to give some variation within a song.
Stan, check out Richard Thompson for superb hybrid picking on acoustic and electric.

Also check out Gordon Giltrap and Julian Lage - both use hybrid picking I believe.

Rory Gallagher used a flat pick and hybrid picking on the majority of his acoustic stuff. 'Out on the Western Plain' is particularly successful.
I attempted to play fingerstyle pieces using this technique when I got into acoustic guitar after a years' long lay off from electric guitar.
Works OK for 'pattern' playing, but not so well for conventional pieces.
I must be alone in thinking that Richard Thompson's hybrid picking is sloppy to the point of distraction, but I've never been a fan.

Another vote for Rory Gallagher - his hybrid picking is what got me thinking about fingerstyle, and served as a good transition to a thumb pick and fingerpicks.
Also, as mentioend above, Julian Lage I think uses this to great effect

I use it, but only on electric, and mainly to get crisp sixths and for playing pedal steel licks a la Clarence White. I haven't really thought about why I do it that way before, but it may be because I'm a fingertip rather than a nails or hybrid player, and I find can get a more consistent sound by cross picking.

Couldn't believe it when I first saw it done. Personally I can't play more than half a dozen notes with a pick without dropping it so stick to fingers and thumbpick.

I second the Isaac Guillory recommendation. I think he was the first person I saw hybrid picking close up, followed soon after by Richard Thompson and Clive Gregson. I use it for fairly simple picking or I'll recruit a finger when playing electric lead sometimes, especially the old sliding sixths.

Oddly, I find I (as a mostly plectrum player) cannot do alternate bass fingerstyle very well at all, but hybrid picked it sounds absolutely fine. I've only realised this in the past week, but expect to do a lot more of it!

Alternate bass is a step too far with a plectrum for me.
