I tried one today at the southern ukulele store in Bournemouth. Delightful it was! Cedar top, African Blackwood back and sides, tuned to G. I put it into the equivalent of Csus2 and it sounded just magical, and absolutely huge. Intonation spot on and very well made. Does anyone have a terz that they use regularly? I think this would be a wonderful tool to have, real harp like sound, with bell like trebles, and a huge bass for such a pint sized instrument.

..only my "fake" Terz - my Fylde Ariel tuned up a minor third. Have kept it in that tuning for several years now. Lovely sound, quite different from capo 3 on a normally tuned guitar. Bigger than a "proper" Terz, but that is a good thing tonally and ergonomically IMHO. Have never tried a purpose built Terz, but that one seems interesting Robbie. Am tempted by an item in the last Fylde newsletter, where Roger made his tenor guitar size body into a six stringer for a customer. Could make a v fine Terz I reckon. Only 21/2 years to go till I'm 70, so maybe I'd better think about ordering one soon.... Keith

That fylde does sound like a good option. Think you should treat yourself! I loved the overall shape of the Pono. They use that shape on their tenors and octave mandolins as well. I checked in their website and the back and sides are Macassar ebony.

Robbie,
I've made a Terz Harp guitar and then at Keith's suggestion a Terz guitar of the same body style but without the hollow arm. As you say they are more harp like and this gets even more so when you venture into Requinto and Piccolo guitar territory.

It was strange Dave, I played through my arrangement of Both Sides Now, which is cappoed at fret 5 on my CGCGCD guitar, putting it in the key of F. This little Pono I tuned to the equivalent but starting at Eb. I played it uncappoed and what I was presented with was the most beautiful, shimmering sound, with loads of sustain, and really reach bell like sound on the trebles. Even though I was playing in a key lower than I normally do, the overall effect was to give a more harp like sound that seemed a lot higher in pitch.
It has convinced me that for certain pieces a terz guitar would be an absolutely wonderful tool.

I stock their octave mandolins, excellent fit and finish and tone.

I stock their octave mandolins, excellent fit and finish and tone. Yeh, I actually went in to try the octave mandolin. Bit of a farcical story really. The chap went to get it, took it out of its case, tuned it up for me (because he obviously thought I was not capable) and the entire top bout cracked in half. I have to say that in my opinion this was not a resaultmof Pono's craftsmanship- the guitar had obviously sustained a horrible gouge in the lower bout by the tail block, which must have cracked the sides. Would love to,try one of the longer scale ones sometime Robbie
